Morgan Tocker writes Master MySQL, a personal blog at tocker.ca about data and programming. Since 2013, 4 different Hacker News readers have linked it 18 times. The last post was in 2019, but the archive is still widely read.
Too few sampled comments (1) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
One HN commenter links this post, from 2014, about making strict sql_mode the default in MySQL, to explain that MySQL can turn warnings into errors via sql_mode.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 1 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
What Hacker News says?
This is indeed the case. To clarify a little: - STRICT_TRANS_TABLES is on by default for "new installations" starting from MySQL 5.6 (2013). What this means is that the bundled config files all turn it on. - Starting from MySQL 5.7, it is a compiled default, along with several other more "strict" options. Effectively making it default to ONLY_FULL_GROUP_BY,STRICT_TRANS_TABLES,NO_ENGINE_SUBSTITUTION,ERROR_FOR_DIVISIO…

HN discussionYou can do something like this for doing a cross version approach: SELECT /*!50706 authentication_string as */ password FROM mysql.user; I wrote about the rationale to some of the password changes here: http://www.tocker.ca/2014/09/05/proposed-changes-to-user-man...

HN discussionI'm a non developer working on the MySQL team. One of the ways that I try to help is by collecting feedback from our community of users and passing it back to the developers. HN discussionI think this echo's Rene's point about moving the cache closer to the application as well. I have some hypothetical numbers illustrating the impact of network latency: http://www.tocker.ca/2013/11/18/how-important-is-it-to-merge... The simple queries are basically free once they get to MySQL. Query cache does not help.

HN discussionMySQL can turn those warnings to exceptions on its own, via sql_mode [1]. New installations of MySQL 5.6 have this behaviour enabled by default on InnoDB tables. [1] http://www.tocker.ca/2014/01/14/making-strict-sql_mode-the-d...

HN discussionThis is noted in the release notes, and I have a blog post on it here: http://www.tocker.ca/2015/03/10/heads-up-mysql-5-7-dmr6-cont... To describe our process: We have at least 2 code reviews, ~90% test coverage before we release a feature in a development milestone. It was then caught by at least 3 people that I know of prior to public release. Since this is not a GA release, it was decided to fix the bug in the ne…

HN discussionYes. See slide 43 for examples of statements that now produce errors by default: http://www.slideshare.net/morgo/upcoming-changes-in-mysql-57 This will break some applications that are upgrading. I have a whitelist/blacklist suggestion on how to transition on my blog: http://www.tocker.ca/2014/09/01/suggestions-for-transitionin...

on “MySQL 5.7.6 is out”1. We're working on something in this area: http://mysqlserverteam.com/generated-columns-in-mysql-5-7-5/ 2. InnoDB has fulltext from MySQL 5.6+ 3. I agree utf8mb4 should be renamed "utf8". When this was introduced it was given a new name to support downgrades, but the feature does exist :) 4. RAND() is actually deterministic (via other meta data written to the binlog). In any case, MySQL also supports Row-based repl…

on “MySQL 5.7.6 is out”Durability will typically be very expensive to implement unless you have a fast SSD or RAID controller with NVRAM, so it will skew the test considerably if you make MySQL offer it, but say MongoDB does not have to. But I do recommend it for the majority of people. Shameless plug: http://www.tocker.ca/2013/06/19/deciding-whether-or-not-to-m... on “Unfair comparisons”InnoDB uses MVCC, so the only operations that respect the SELECT .. FOR UPDATE queries are updates. As long as you use transactions, I wouldn't say this is a common application pattern. It was good for the article to mention gap locking/next key locking - a lot of users are surprised by it. The only comment I would make, is that it not required when using Row-based-replication: http://www.tocker.ca/2013/09/04/row-ba…
