What Hacker News says?

  1. Google Reader is irreplaceable, it is not only about reading RSS. That is the easy part. It is about going back in time and accessing all past feeds in an organized way (it is difficult to rebuilt that from crawling and web scraping). If you add a blog now you can read articles that are not present in the current feed. Google Reader is the core of my information diet. Not twitter. Thousands of blogs starred, liked,…

Microsoft frequently made changes that broke both products. Don't get me started on Microsoft's PPTP and Kerberos. - Nvidia produced their own closed drivers on Linux. What triggered the article was the unresponsiveness from the Thunderbird team about ugly bugs we reported and they removed!

  23. Shameless plug: my company develops Deviare[1]: "code interception for dummies". It allows to intercept a Windows application from any COM capable programming language. We have interesting code samples such as capturing video intercepting DirectX[2] and hooking into SQL Server to abort unsecure (e.g. injection attacks) queries[3]. 1. http://www.nektra.com/products/deviare-api-hook-windows/devi... 2. http://blog.nekt…

  25. > If your only response to this is "go cry to various small tech publications", then you're doing it wrong. I don't think so. The main issue is that people think that there are APIs because companies promote their interoperability to gain developers. Companies are not being sincere and nobody is taking notice. To not repeat this and other opinions I post one of my recent posts on the subject: "Reverse Engineering an…

  27. but what else could the IRS have done without approval from congress? Patching the security issues themselves? I know this can be complex in many cases but the security and reverse engineering community have this knowledge, probably not fixing the whole issue but at least blocking it. My two cents: if you need to instrument native Windows applications, including Win32 and COM, my company develops three mature GPLv3 libs: 1/ Deviare In-Proc (like Microsoft Detours): https://github.com/nektra/Deviare-InProc 2/ Deviare Hooking Engine (even novices can instrument apps): https://github.com/nektra/Deviare2 3/ RemoteBridge (access internal COM and Java apps) https://github.com/nektra/RemoteBridge All th…
