Why HN links it
HN readers link Nomic's blog for its embedding and model release posts, such as Nomic Embed v1, Matryoshka embeddings in Nomic Embed 1.5, and Nomic Embed Text V2. Comments cite these as sources.

What Hacker News says?
I get what you're saying, I was watching this the other day: Titanic (1997) - Iceberg,Right ahead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYOn3-PhA9c It's all so incredibly manual, from the guys who literally stand at the front of the ship just looking out for icebergs, to the man running and pulling on a giant ringing lever of some kind to tell the engine room what to do, the guys in the engine room running around in a pan…

HN discussionHere's a summary of what's happened the past couple of years and what tools are out there. After ChatGPT released, there was a lot of hype in the space but open source was far behind. Iirc the best open foundation LLM that existed was GPT-2 but it was two generations behind. Awhile later Meta released LLaMA[1], a well trained base foundation model, which brought an explosion to open source. It was soon implemented i…

on “Codestral Mamba”Yes, I'm planning out-of-the-box support for nomic[1] which can run in-process, and ollama which runs as a local server and supports many free embedding models[2]. [1]: https://www.nomic.ai/blog/posts/nomic-embed-text-v1 [2]: https://ollama.com/search?c=embedding

on “Gemini Embedding: Powering RAG and context engineering”The Matryoshka trick is really neat - there's a good explanation here: https://huggingface.co/blog/matryoshka I've seen it in a few models now - Nomic Embed 1.5 was the first https://www.nomic.ai/blog/posts/nomic-embed-matryoshka

on “Gemini Embedding: Powering RAG and context engineering”I like how Web Development and User Experience grouping is way outside the central bubble. Nonetheless, great visualization of a lot of data. I need to learn more about this: UMAP: https://umap-learn.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ Nomic-Embed: https://www.nomic.ai/blog/posts/nomic-embed-text-v1 The visual groupings aren't perfect. For example, there are a quite a few COVID-19 tagged articles before 2020.

on “Hacker News Data Map [180MB]”Hey Elliot, Andriy, co-founder at Nomic here! Congrats on Embed v4 - the more embeddings the merrier! Embed v1.5 is a 1.5 year old model! You should check out our latest comparable open-weights, multimodal embedding model that's designed for text, PDFs and images! I can't directly say anything about relative performance to Embed v4 as you guys didn't publish evals on the Vidore-V2 open benchmark! https://www.nomic.a…

on “Cohere Launches Embed 4”I have huge respect for Cohere and this embedding model looks like it could be best-in-class, but I find it hard to commit to a proprietary embedding model that's only available via an API when there are such good open weight models available. I really like the approach Nomic take: their most recent models are available via their API or as open weights for non-commercial use only (unless you buy a license). They lat…

on “Ask HN: What's Your Useful Local LLM Stack?”The article starts off by creating in-memory vector embeddings for a list of "documents" (aka chunks of text) using the nomic model: https://www.nomic.ai/blog/posts/nomic-embed-text-v1 They then use cosine similarity to compare the user's query to retrieve a list of "top N" embeddings which point to the doc chunks, then shove those into the entire query which is sent off to the LLM. RAG is just a means of injecting…
