Why HN links it
HN readers link Norman Maurer's blog for its post on the hidden performance cost of Java exceptions. Commenters cite it as support for pre-allocating exceptions without stack traces, a pattern Netty uses.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 2 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

HN discussionIn Java, you can pre-allocate static final Exception objects with a pre-filled stack. These exceptions have much better performance characteristics [1] and are used by Netty [2] for control flow purposes. Sometimes these are helpful and the performance is good, but only when you don't need a full stacktrace or to customize the error message.
