Too few sampled comments (2) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

The linked posts cover retro hardware and display choices. One commenter mentions replacing the NES 72-pin connector, and another cites the blog's OLED post while recommending a monitor for high-quality text at 4K.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 2 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. https://nuxx.net It's where I've put my personal thoughts / things I want to publish publicly for... years now. The focus is more on the content than the platform, so it's a basic WP site that's easy for me to get content into. (Yes, I know there's some image/link rot. That's what 20+ years of one website gets you without a tremendous amount of navel-gazing.)

  3. Finally, a reply that is correct. Thank you; too many people leave seasoning up to being some mystery when it's really just that straightforward. FWIW, I wrote this up a few years back after I went down the rabbit hole of seasoning pans, only to find that it's actually really simple and just as you describe: https://nuxx.net/blog/2014/01/24/well-seasoned-cast-iron-pan...

  5. This isn't super-detailed (it's more a framework) but here is my general mapping workflow: https://nuxx.net/blog/2012/06/05/mtb-trail-mapping-workflow-... The end goal for this is printable PDF maps, with good data ending up in OSM one of the stepping stones.

  9. I once took the train from the Detroit area (BMM -- Birmingham) to San Francisco, roughly... 9.5 years ago. I went alone, had a sleeper cabin to myself, and loved it. I really want to do it again, this time maybe stopping off places on the way. What I particularly enjoyed was the route west seemed timed to pass through the Rockies and Sierra Nevada during daylight. Basically, I went to sleep around Omaha, woke in Co…

  11. I love OpenStreetMap, see it as sort of like Wikipedia for cartographic data, and regularly use it as both a repository and source for data I collect about mountain bike and hiking trails. I then use this to make print maps; part of my work with a local mountain biking advocacy non-profit. In fact, just yesterday while watching a storm blow outside my window I put this one together: http://mmba.org/library/maps/bald…

  13. I used to do something similarly complex to the OP with ssh and --link-dest to make it share inodes so I could easily keep N days of backups with file level deduplication [1]. Then I moved to Borg and haven't looked back. It does the same end goal in a better way, is way faster, and easier to work with overall [2]. 15. Or if you're really brave you could just replace the 72-pin reader: http://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-NES-Cartridge-Slot-Replacemen... https://nuxx.net/wiki/NES_72-Pin_Edge_Connector_Replacement I did it on mine in college -- and then I did it for my suite-mate after he noticed that I never had any problems with my NES -- and then I did it for everyone on my floor who had an NES... :) Works like brand new.

  17. I've got a Blueair one that I was given, which thankfully has cheap filters available for on Amazon. These are otherwise REALLY expensive. The noise is nice, and it helps with dust in the bedroom. But I recently got a Yogasleep Dohm Classic [1] and it really does sound better. Placed across the bedroom, with the two controls adjusted just... right... it makes that really nice water-rushing proper white noise sound.…

  19. Unfortunately, it's anything that's slow... When I've got a tunnel live, Google properties and Facebook are pretty much unusable. Weirdly, sometimes it'll work fine... Other times it won't. (The server I'm testing against with is my personal site, https://nuxx.net , which has great IPv6 connectivity already. I just don't want to tunnel my home connection through it because that'll seriously push up the bandwidth use…

  21. This is missing one of the most useful features of using netsh for this: boot time captures. By using the "persistent=yes" argument one can cause the capture to keep running through a reboot. This is incredibly useful when trying to troubleshoot something that happens before login. This was very, very difficult before without a tap, span port, etc. I wrote a small article about doing this a few years back, for anyon…

  23. I'm honestly a bit surprised to see this. As someone who was fairly active in the MAME cabinet scene back in ~2000 [1] and owned a 4-slot MVS cab for a while, I don't remember ever hearing about this. Then again, it was in-arcade hardware in ~1999 and I was so focused on emulation stuff that it makes I didn't consider it. Probably got chalked up with all the other unplayable-in-MAME stuff at the time.. [1] My cabine…

  25. I'm with JKCaloun on having owned music for as long as I can remember. From the late 90s until the early 2010s I routinely bought CDs and ended up with a library of... 1200 or 1600 or so? A bunch of years back I made a concerted effort to rip all of them to a lossless format and then play that because, frankly, it's simpler. Since then I've bought music digitally (Bleep, Bandcamp, etc), saved off copies of live sets…

  27. Years ago I bought a Nikon Coolscan V to scan in all of my parents' old 110 slides. I would have loved a solution like this at the time, although that worked well (and way better than I thought) and the price ended up reasonable. I wish scanners like that were still made. Here's an old httrack image of the page I had documenting the process: https://nuxx.net/wiki_archive/A/110_Slide_/_35mm_Negative_Sc... Unfortunate…

I do mountain bike trail work and mapping, and I like putting very large QR codes on the trail head sign kiosks with a note saying "Scan this QR code with your phone to download a copy of this map.".
