Occasional diary is a personal blog at cofault.com about math and history. Since 2015, 11 different Hacker News readers have linked it 25 times, most often “3-Lisp: an infinite tower of meta-circular interpreters”. It is still writing: the last post was on 2026-11-01, and you can follow it by feed.
Too few sampled comments (3) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers link cofault for technical explainers on systems topics: file system cache replacement, the Treadmill garbage collector, and the 3-Lisp infinite tower of meta-interpreters.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
File system cache replacement algorithms. That one word made me think it would be something more like migrating to a different filesystem in realtime, which is also an interesting but probably less explored topic. The second part of the article is where all the interesting results are: http://www.cofault.com/2006/10/previous-item.html Spoiler: the differences are quite small.

HN discussionI was curious about "3-lisp". It seems to be this http://www.cofault.com/2022/08/3-lisp-infinite-tower-of-meta... Discussed three months ago https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32614795

HN discussionThe Treadmill collector was designed for realtime contexts ( https://www.cofault.com/2022/07/treadmill.html is a very good explanation for it and how it works, but the paper itself is also very readable). Really any incremental GC can be used in a realtime context though, where you visit objects until you hit some time budget and then resume your interpreter.
