What Hacker News says?

  1. Since caller id was implemented so poorly: https://www.onsip.com/blog/how-caller-id-works-why-it-might-... Maybe it would be nice if we had something kind of like a CAPTCHA, where an app on your phone would say "please dial <random-number> and say your name to complete your call" and the person would have to dial it and say who they are to talk to you. Totally knee-jerk idea I realize, but I literally get 10 SCAM LI…

  3. It's because: 1) Caller id was conceptually flawed from the beginning so was implemented as an honor system instead of something required to communicate (like an IP address) 2) Caller id is unregulated, so there is no penalty for spoofing My previous comment on it: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19303931 From the linked article: Unlike phone numbers and domain name service (DNS), wherein there are internationa…

  5. yep. $2 per month for phone numbers plus usage. The cool thing is they don't charge per user. Totally SIP compliant so any phone will do. http://www.onsip.com

  7. We found today this is no longer the case --> http://www.onsip.com/blog/rob/2011/03/08/google-voice-sip-ad... As for Yate, we believe it has the same issue we found with native Android SIP support: It doesn't distinguish between auth username and username, which creates limitations. (SIP Authentication username not configurable - RFC 3261 Section 22.1)

  11. "Spoofing" caller ID is a feature, not a bug or hack. Pretty much all VoIP providers let you send a callerID name/number [1]. If they don't, it's because they've done extra work to explicitly block it. If you're using Asterisk, for example, setting the number is a simple command [2] before you call the dial command, and is trivial to script. CallerID name is more complex [3], as some providers will pass it along and…

  12. We use OnSIP, http://www.onsip.com/ I HIGHLY recommend them. Call quality is great, support is competent, and the pricing structure is usage based, not a flat rate. I don't work for them, and I am not an affiliate, but I have been a customer for 3-4 years.

  13. The lack of enforcement of net neutrality and its subsequent demise have enabled telecom companies to throttle streaming music & video while extorting smaller providers for internet peering. The large players (Netflix in particular) have ongoing settlement free peering with Comcast, Verizon, etc that was mediated and enabled by the FCC's prior Net Neutrality policy, hence why they were silent about its demise. Peeri…

  14. Most SIP aware firewalls utilize SIP Application Level Gateway (ALG) architecture. Verizon Wireless does this in the US, and it completely breaks most SIP applications, unless you connect to your server over a VPN: https://www.onsip.com/blog/in-depth-verizon-blocks-sip-traff...
