Too few sampled comments (24) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
OpenSource Connections' blog covers search relevance, Solr and Elasticsearch comparisons, BM25 and vector search, and databases. HN readers link its search comparisons and relevance posts.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 24 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
At OpenSource Connections we specialize in search & AI training and consulting including Elasticsearch, Solr and OpenSearch.

HN discussionAs someone who works in search this is unsurprising, and happens all the time. Search is a two sided sales exercise both to show you good products and also to products that make the e-commerce business money. Search is the e-commerce businesses sales person - not a neutral broker. You don’t expect the blue shirt at Best Buy to be entirely neutral do you? It’s actually a pretty understudied microeconomics case https:…

HN discussionHere is their resiliency status: https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/elasticsearch/resiliency/cur... It depends on your use case. If you are already familiar with Solr and it is good enough for your use case, then use it. Solr and ES are about the same feature-wise. Scaling is easier for ES because it is built-in. Here is a good comparison of their APIs. part 1: http://opensourceconnections.com/blog/2015/12/15/solr-vs-e…

HN discussiontl;dr is that those are different approaches to weighting documents in order to return the most relevant ones for a query. HN discussionOn “return generators instead of lists” I think it’s also important when you do this to return use a context manager to manage the generators lifetime. Otherwise you might be surprised when the underlying file or source is closed later in your code. I blogged about this: https://opensourceconnections.com/blog/2020/06/10/python-gen...

HN discussionYes you’re right on exact matches. For basic keyword searches. It’s not uncommon for search users to want inexact equivalencies, synonyms or conceptually close search results. (Search for cold, get back rhinovirus). Every user and use case has different definitions/tolerances of “this term appeared on the page” It’s a complicated topic, without simple solutions. I wrote about it here. https://opensourceconnections.c…

HN discussionI would say this isn't machine learning, but relevance in general is an interesting topic to apply supervised learning. Of course the training data is the hard part, An article on the topic, https://opensourceconnections.com/blog/2017/08/03/search-as-... (disclaimer I wrote it...)

HN discussionI think a lot off preference towards humans is an issue of trust and a measure of your relationship with that person. HN discussionIn 2015, they evaluated Apache Solr and Elasticsearch and decided to build their own (Firefly). They said, other solutions did not scale. So, instead of contributing to scaling (like Apple and Bloomberg and Cloudera did), they went the other way. Now, they seem to be doing it again (at least they are using Tika). In a meanwhile, Solr implemented most of the features they are describing in their architecture document…
