Hi
Personal blog · over-yonder.net/~fullermd/rantssystemsprogramming
Hi is a personal blog at over-yonder.net about systems and programming. Since 2009, 37 different Hacker News readers have linked it 41 times, most often “BSD vs. Linux (2005)”. No feed was found, so read it on the site itself.
Too few sampled comments (26) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers mostly link the 'BSD for Linux Users' rant series on over-yonder.net to explain how BSD systems differ from Linux. The site also has a resume generator and other rants.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 26 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
I remember checking out http://over-yonder.net/ after being linked from Slashdot circa 2006. I always have a soft spot for the "Homepage" link on Slashdot. I was impressed with his resume generator at the time: https://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/resume

HN discussionThis is a classic that may help you understand better why some people choose BSDs: http://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/rants/bsd4linux/01 Also, there are still new things being invented for BSDs (and Illumos) that aren't available in Linux. E.g. FreeBSD has Jails and Illumos has Zones which provide a complete solution for "containers" which are put together from different components in Linux which overall may not b…

HN discussionYes, I'm using FreeBSD on my netbook. I tried some Linux distros there, but they were too slow. My netbook came with Fedora, where yum was terribly lagging, it was taking even 40minutes to upgrade 20pacakges (what happened weekly), I tried Debian with LXDE, it was faster, but I wasn't able to watch youtube, video was lagging on 460p. GF was using it as portable PC to listen to podcasts etc, but starting any applicat…

HN discussionIt always felt to me like when people use words like "intuitiveness" or "usability", they're all pointing at slightly different things. Matt Fuller's partitioning of user-friendliness into "easy to use", "easy to learn", and "easy to use without learning"[0] feels like it might be easier to set objective criteria for. For your example, you might say functional programming tends to be easy to use, but hard to learn a…

HN discussionFor most simple servers/projects I use Debian/some sort of linux, so I'm pretty unknowledgeable but curious about the BSD side of things. What are the advantages/differences of using bsd over any other linux distro? Edit: For anyone interested, I actually Googled the question and found a pretty interesting article: http://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/rants/bsd4linux/01

HN discussionThat is an interpretation at odds with UNIX history, and basically only applicable to Linux, which is the exception to the rule. I suggest reading this article, it's written for FreeBSD but applies very similarly to Solaris etc. https://www.over-yonder.net/~fullermd/rants/bsd4linux/03

HN discussionFrom a technical standpoint, Linux is a System V-style Unix and BSD is (unsurprisingly) a Berkeley-style Unix. One of the most striking differences (which he didn't mention) is the init system - SysV uses /etc/init.d/, while BSD uses /etc/rc.conf and the like. Also, see the "hier" (filesystem layout) man pages for FreeBSD ( http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=hier ) and OpenBSD ( http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/…

HN discussionI will say something that is completely incorrect as facts, but helpful as a thought technology: Choosing BSD over Linux is like choosing Slackware over Elementary. The differences are there, but they're very niche and subtle in the technical side and the philosophical side. If you've never used a BSD, you can safely think of it as just another linux distro, and use the same reasoning you'd use to choose your favori…

HN discussionThere are a lot of reasons. The ports system has already been mentioned, and some people really like ZFS. More to the point, though, licensing differences ensure that more software (like ZFS) is legally compatible with FreeBSD than with any typical Linux+GNU distribution. It has also been mentioned that FreeBSD is "a sysadmin's dream". A big part of the reason for this is its userland. The truth of the matter is tha…
