Why HN links it
HN readers link Pablo Meier's programming posts: a Prolog solution to a Layton puzzle, a piece on JavaScript's origin, and an essay comparing software developers to rockstars.

What Hacker News says?
It's made my life way, way better It's not a panacea, and the way people talk about it drives me crazy. There are many different modalities, with very different levels of effectiveness for any given person. CBT is awful for me, for example, and it's the most popular modality. I also did ketamine-assisted therapy and it absolutely changed my life. There are definitely people who won't get anything from it, but the re…

HN discussionWhile I didn't try to use Docker (though we did use the same pxhere image :-p), I also struggled to get a productive setup of OCaml. Getting a switch running wasn't the hard part, it was making the environment suitable for real project work. I had a set of Make targets in mind (test, build, shell), some language dev features I wanted (jump to definition, type of expression under cursor), and some properties of the p…

HN discussionDon't understand why the article uses SWI's constraint libs when the problem is easily solved using pure ISO Prolog with code readily linked from the article even ie Pablo's solution at [2]. Just paste that code into [1] and append the line (or place it at the start, doesn't matter) :- initialization(colin_score(X)). to tell Prolog which top-level goal to solve and hit Execute to see the solution in your browser. [1…

HN discussionHaha I was checking the comments precisely to see if this was the case. This happens nearly everywhere a language that isn't Java, Python, Ruby, Go, PHP, or JavaScript is used. IMO it has more to do with tech labor arbitrage[1] than anything technical. Even if a system is punching above its weight, over time, the Weird Language Choice spooks people enough that they get the rewrite bug. Bleacher Report is a funny exa…

HN discussionHi! Have we met? Elixir has been great for our Authorization server. I really believe in the BEAM for high-uptime cases, and love a lot about Ecto's design as an ORM. That said, I only felt comfortable bringing Elixir to Ramp because I'd already built ~3 Pheonix projects before joining, and had a decade on other Erlang projects. I make a light reference to it in a few places in the article, but I think introducing W…

HN discussionI think the "rock star" analogy did more damage to our profession than most care to admit. Rock stars get treated a certain way, they are catered to, their egos might get fluffed up, etc. None of those behaviors are compatible with working in software teams, and none of the "best" developers I know want to be treated that way, anyhow. That said, I think this article is essentially correct. I would put it like this:…

HN discussionAuthor here; I have a lot of other posts in my personal blog about this, but: the current trends in VC-backed tech companies are about minimizing risk and following fashion, rather than any technical merit or experimentation. Said another way: if an Elixir company dies, it's "damn, shouldn't have picked Elixir!" If a Python company dies, it's "startups are hard," with no investigation behind what Python cost you. I…

HN discussionThanks for the kind words! Another comment mentions it, but last I checked Elixir is still powering the Authorization service.
