Paul Beckwith's personal blog at paulbeckwith.net covers science. Since 2016, 4 different Hacker News readers have linked it 5 times. The last post was in 2023, but the archive is still widely read.
Too few sampled comments (3) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers link Paul Beckwith's site for climate tech and carbon removal overviews, videos reviewing climate papers, and writing on Arctic sea ice and jet stream and polar vortex behaviour.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
Abrupt Climate Change from Arctic to Antarctic: Facts, Opinions, and Analysis
What Hacker News says?
Net negative emissions must be a global goal within 5 years because this is a climate change emergency. It doesn't mean no emissions, it means deeply net negative. Even going crazy to get to zero emissions, it doesn't change the inconvenient fact that an excess of GHGs are already in the air. Sequestration (CCS) and solar shades (SRM) are the primary, big-$tretch approaches that are most readily-apparent to moderati…

HN discussionI’ve been watching some videos from https://paulbeckwith.net/ IIRC he was reviewing some paper a while back about the disappearing arctic ice that wasn’t included in the IPCC models. Basically claiming that the target dates they mention should in fact come a few decades earlier. So if things need to happen by 2050, it could be more like by 2035

on “The world won't hit climate goals unless energy innovation rapidly accelerated”This is what happens with insufficient Arctic sea ice unable to maintain itself through all seasons. The greatest climatic danger is when a weak polar vortex stabilizes into an unconventional, malformed, fixed series of stable Rossby wave nodes that are unable to change themselves leading to severe, enduring flooding or droughts to the south. https://paulbeckwith.net/2018/12/18/jet-streams-getting-stuc... https://pa…
