I think this is the best implementation of this kind of site I've used. I see you already include a paleo option and thats great, but as an ibs sufferer I also adhere to the fodmap diet's guidelines and have had a lot of success with it. This diet excludes foods such as garlic which you cannot currently exclude manually unless you block each individual recipe which I have done. It would be great if you gave a fodmap…

HN discussionIt is sad to see how we are going from fat phobia to carb phobia, repeating the same mistakes 50 years later. I have genetic metabolic disease and I have thought about this many times. My conclusion is simple enough: Eat real food, ignore the macros, listen to your body and adapt your food intake accordingly. Paul Jaminet's diet [1] is the closest I have found to fit this idea. on “The Sugar Conspiracy”I never said that you should _only_ eat steaks and potatoes, did I? This diet recommends a pound of fatty meat per day: http://perfecthealthdiet.com/the-diet/ The book that describes the diet cites over 1000 studies and empirical evidence to prove that the diet is healthy. Now who am I to believe?

on “As we age, cancer rates go up as immune system winds down”Thanks, very helpful. Most modern illness is caused by a pervasive lack of autophagy, which is basically a cellular cleaning cycle for your body. Since we're all rich and we eat and snack all the time, autophagy cycles are basically never activated. The body needs "feasting" for cellular growth, but is also _needs_ famine for cellular dismantling and re-purposing. Otherwise you'll have cells with damaged mitochondri…

on “Higher-paid, faster-growing tech jobs are concentrating in 8 US hubs”> Adding iodine can't help Iodine can still push forward the pathways that synthesize thyroid hormones and increase levels, even in many cases where the thyroid is damaged, e.g. hashimotos. In fact, most hormones can have their synthesis pushed by megadosing on their chemical precursors- however that can be unsafe of course. Yes, it can be harmful, and depends on context- but you'll find a ton of info online about p…

on “Adding iodine to salt played a role in cognitive improvements: research (2013)”I'm no expert but I'd suggest: 1) make a list of all your chronic symptoms over time 2) speak to a doctor about your particular concerns re: hormone levels, and get blood tests taken 3) if your doctor reckons, based on the results, that treatment is justified, I guess you're on your way; if not: 4) study the literature - if you disagree with your doctor about your results, you should be able to find literature that…

on “Is your personality fixed, or can you change who you are?”Define "fine"... reference levels of TSH for example are controversial [0]. The HUNT study in Norway (which followed 25,000 healthy Norwegians for 8 years) found death rates 69% higher amongst women with TSH 2.5-3.5 mIU/L than amongst those with TSH 0.5-1.4 mIU/L [1] (via [2]). on “LSD helps to treat alcoholism”I'd also recommend "The perfect health diet" [1]. Awful title but the book is superb, easily as good as Taubes, practically every paragraph has references to studies. [1] http://perfecthealthdiet.com/

on “Sugar 50x more potent than total calories in explaining diabetes [video]”I made it through the first few pages and the author seems to treat calories from all sources the same. I wonder what his take on the theory that calories from some sources (e.g. saturated and monounsaturated fats) are generally not translated to fat in your body whereas calories from other sources (glucose, fructose) generally are. For example, a tbsp of coconut oil contains 117 calories while the same volume of su…

on “The Hacker's Diet (2005)”The paleo movement has long since moved away from "eat what paleoliths ate" to focus on "nothing in biology makes sense except in light of evolution".[1] Multiple thought leaders (e.g. Chriss Kresser[2] and Robb Wolf) have acknowledged genetic changes such as lactase persistence and changes in iron metabolism that have arisen in the last 10,000 years. Succesful inclusion of dietary grains however, requires fundament…

on “It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream”“If eating wheat was so bad for us, it’s hard to imagine that populations that ate it would have tolerated it for 10,000 years,” Sarah A. Tishkoff, a geneticist at the University of Pennsylvania who studies lactase persistence, told me. Sarah, turn on your brain. What about Game Theory? What if wheat is addictive and mankind did not enslave Wheat but wheat (and possible other crops) "enslaved" mankind? There is evid…

on “Gluten intolerance may really be immune dysfunction”Gluten destroyed my life and nearly killed me in the end (DH). My live could have been very different with a gluten free diet. on “Backlash has begun against gluten-free dieters”Where is the literature? Without strong supporting studies, arguments like these have little merit. This seems like more of the established argument that saturated and mono unsaturated fats are unhealthy (butter, coconut oil, beef tallow, etc), where in fact polyunsaturated fats are better for you (canola oil, sunflower oil, most fried foods, etc). I find this hard to believe. Just a simple common sense analysis dis…

on “Omega-3s in the blood may boost risk of aggressive prostate cancer”I have just finished http://perfecthealthdiet.com/ which is probably the most comprehensively research backed book (that's also easy to read) on nutrition I've read. (I include the excellent Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes in that comparison). The PHD book lists soy as a toxin.. Based on everything that I've read, I have formed the opinion (which has changed somewhat over time) that it's better to eat nat…
