What Hacker News says?
I would add Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming. It's about programming paradigms in general, and helps in contextualizing functional programming in a broader context https://www.info.ucl.ac.be/~pvr/book.html

HN discussionFor people like me that didn't know: CTM stands for Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming. More info here: https://www.info.ucl.ac.be/~pvr/book.html Seems like a very interesting read!

HN discussionI understand your point, but I still think it is bad from the point of view of language paradigms[1]. Iframes should have not been created in the first place.. You are changing the purpose of the language while it was not made for it. (yes in my view I interpret includes as a basic procedure) [1] http://www.info.ucl.ac.be/people/PVR/paradigmsDIAGRAMeng201....

HN discussion> rather than expressing them as particular instances of more general things (as you'd do using category theory), he breaks them into a small set of more fundamental things which can be re-combined into familiar design patterns. I haven't read that book, but it sounds similar to how Peter van Roy deconstructs programming paradigms: [1] https://www.info.ucl.ac.be/~pvr/VanRoyChapter.pdf [2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wi…

HN discussion> If not SICP, then what? Maybe HTDP? I can recommend "Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming" (CTM or CTMCP). Book's page: https://www.info.ucl.ac.be/~pvr/book.html Quote from www.c2.com: "Like SiCp, CTMCP is first and foremost a book on programming, not on Oz or Scheme or anything else. And if SiCp is the reigning king of such books, CTM is a worthy challenger to that particular throne."

HN discussionFor a more general analysis of programming paradigms, see the work of Peter Van Roy [2], which decomposes paradigms in the individual components [1] that are used or avoided in each particular paradigm.
