What Hacker News says?
Checked out Dat and Beaker, and I'm in love already - it's great to see people appreciating the terrible costs of the blockchain, and figuring out how to get distributed trust without it. The post by Beaker's creator, linked in this article, is also worth a look: https://pfrazee.github.io/blog/secure-ledgers-dont-require-p... .

HN discussionThere are promising alternatives to energy intensive proof-of-work crypto algorithms. Specifically proof-of-stake (Ethereum, etc)[0], and ledger-backed services[1]. [0] https://blockgeeks.com/guides/ethereum-casper/ [1] https://pfrazee.github.io/blog/secure-ledgers-dont-require-p...

HN discussionHey all. This is the second time I'm submitting Beaker. First time was back in august.[1] Since then, we've done a lot to improve the browser and build on the ideas. I've written about the P2P Web here[2], and there's a talk at the Web 1.0 conference[3] that goes into more depth if you're still curious. Happy to answer any questions. Architecture/scaling, privacy, FOSS on the Web, etc. 1 https://news.ycombinator.com…

HN discussionA few years ago, I saw a proposal for multiplayer games which suggested that the time passage between ticks vary depending on how many users are playing within a close space, to help deal with the increased network load. This is something that Eve Online does, but it segments its game-space into discrete sectors and therefore it slows down time uniformly in these sectors. This proposal was to do the same, but variab…

HN discussionHi. This seems very interesting. I followed the rabit hole and ended up here https://pfrazee.github.io/blog/what-is-the-p2p-web . And also checked provided git. Still doesn't understand how you published straight from the Beaker Browser so your dat:// site is accesible via http! Can you elaborate bit more? Thanks Edit: I've got it :-) Edit2: You've installed awscli, but never used in Dockerfile. Why?

HN discussionTL;DR: We can use the Dat protocol as a WAN filesystem, give the user a "Root Dat Archive," and build in a bash-like JS terminal. Users can configure and manage their system modifying files in their Root Archive, and can link in archives published by self or others. We've got a demo of the terminal now https://pfrazee.github.io/assets/img/webterm.gif
