Physics with an edge is a personal blog at physicsfromtheedge.blogspot.com about science. Since 2019, 5 different Hacker News readers have linked it 7 times. It is still writing: the last post was on 2026-10-06, and you can follow it by feed.
Too few sampled comments (6) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN readers link this blog for its posts on quantized inertia, Mike McCulloch's modified-gravity idea that aims to explain galaxy dynamics without dark matter, using inertia and information-based reasoning.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

Without endorsing it, and presenting it here without comment, http://physicsfromtheedge.blogspot.com/ has explanations of the theory preferred there (which I think can be labeled an entropic theory of inertia, or perhaps an information-theory-based theory of inertia) that might be an ELI5. The following is my attempt at casting McColloch's idea as an ELI5. McColloch's idea is that inertia is a result of asymmetric U…

HN discussionYou might be interested in quantized inertia http://physicsfromtheedge.blogspot.com/ which is a model that does away with the need for dark matter and that has been gaining some interest. For instance, author claims it replicates the success of MOND but also predicts where MOND and GR both fail (see wide binaries posts on the blog). I 100% agree that when the model doesn’t fit the data, making up some hitherto undet…

on “One night of telescope time rules out black hole/dark matter idea”I want to build a bitgrid ASIC, I think it would be a good stepping stone to getting petaflops in the hands of the masses. Even if the chip itself is a bust, I think the concept of the chip itself could be a "solvent" in terms of thinking about how to get there. Unlike a Turing machine, this has no moving pointers, so it's much easier to think about. I'm completely sold on the shockingly old idea of capability based…

on “Ask HN: What new areas of technology are the most intriguing to you?”Sadly, no. It's a crackpot reactionless drive supposedly running on Mike McCulloch's version of MiHsC Quantised Inertia, related to Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). https://physicsfromtheedge.blogspot.com/2021/11/a-thrust-fro... https://www.vice.com/amp/en/article/7x3ed9/darpa-is-research...

on “IVO Ltd Introduces the World’s First Pure Electric Thruster for Satellites”It's also possible that inertia is quantized[1], which further complicates things. There is an experiment launching soon which may offer some evidence either way. [1] https://physicsfromtheedge.blogspot.com

on “Chaotic gravitational systems and their irreversibility to the Planck length”I'm a follower of the "Quantized Gravity" flavor of modified gravity, as proposed by Mike McCulloch[1]. I fully realize it's a fringe theory, but there should be experimental evidence from an actual thruster flown in space , launching in less than 90 days..[2] I hope he's right... but the only way to know is to wait and see. Reactionless thrust would be a handy way to get around the cosmos. [1] https://physicsfromth…
