What Hacker News says?
Thanks. I took the "making this pretty is the web clients job" approach, it looks nice in firefox reader mode. The two biggest issues are: 1. Syntax higlighting doesn't exist in reader. 2. The index page ( http://flukus.github.io/ ) can't render in reader mode, it didn't hit the "must have a paragraph with at least 68 characters" or whatever the arbitrary limitation is. For the later I'm hoping the add some sort of…

HN discussionPersonal blog spam, I learned make recently too and discovered it was good for high level languages as well, here is an example of building a c# project: http://flukus.github.io/rediscovering-make.html . Now the blog itself is built with make: http://flukus.github.io/building-a-blog-engine.html

HN discussionThe problem I had with it was all the crap google would do automagically, not really an ant problem, but building android software is a mess: http://flukus.github.io/2014/08/19/2014_08_19_Android-Take-b...

HN discussionI've got an example of powershell getting verbose here: http://flukus.github.io/2015/03/13/2015_03_13_Powershell-is-... . Ignore the rest and look at the example where I'm trying to copy a directory recursively and with a filter. In bash the same task is a relatively simple one liner: find . -type f -name '*.html' -exec cp {} /home/new_dir/{} \; If you know a simpler way in powershell please post it though.

on “Visual Studio Code 1.9”> I dunno, I've never seen a readable Makefile in any system above say 300 files. The build complexity should be a reflection of the project complexity, not the number of source files. Having to run in multiple environments and separating things into libraries would add complexity for instance, adding a new source file shouldn't. When you start adding calls and loops however, that complexity grows exponentially inst…

on “Don't remove the $(nop) command below”Here's a slightly more involved but still incredibly simple one I put together: https://flukus.github.io/building-a-blog-engine.html Turned out a hell of a lot faster than any static site generator I've used.

on “Top Open-Source Static Site Generators”With android it's not just boilerplate code but the undocumented tooling involved as well. It might be to late for you now, but I broke some of it down into something more understandable a while ago: http://flukus.github.io/2014/08/19/2014_08_19_Android-Take-b...

on “Unexecute”This is my experience too, anything non-trivial quickly becomes an absolute mess, even the trivial things often have bad defaults. A few years ago I looked into using it as a build system for .net projects but ended up tearing my hair out on even the simplest things like removing directories or recursively copying html files: http://flukus.github.io/powershell-is-a-joke.html

on “PowerShell 7.0”From what I remember Include will only match items from the base directory and powershell gets stupidly complicated very quickly: http://flukus.github.io/2015/03/13/2015_03_13_Powershell-is-...

on “Using Rust for 'Scripting'”Reader view is a good start but it needs to be extended. As a user I want to be able to turn it on universally and opt out for certain sites, or at least make it the default on some sites. When I rebuilt my blog ( http://flukus.github.io/ ) I tried to build it with reader mode in mind but it's hard, there are some hidden heuristics to trigger it's availability, you need a paragraph with at least 67 characters or som…

on “How the Web Became Unreadable (2016)”> some variant of Make without the C obsession Make doesn't have a C obsession (although the docs do), make works anywhere you have a dependency graph that can be expressed as a file timestamp. Here's an example compiling a c# project: http://flukus.github.io/rediscovering-make.html . It's much simpler than any .net build tool (and I've tried them all).

on “Why I Moved Back from Gradle to Maven”I did the same, makefile and accompanying blog entry is here: http://flukus.github.io/building-a-blog-engine.html Turned out much simpler (if less feature full), much faster (it's finished in the time it takes node to start) and much more stable than other's I've used.

on “Ask HN: In what creative ways are you using Makefiles?”That looks handy. I got bored one day and built a fluent interface: http://flukus.github.io/fluent-interfaces-for-c.html

on “Generics in C without void* or macros – enabled by psychec”Here is a post I made (and generated) about my generator: http://flukus.github.io/building-a-blog-engine.html It's pretty similar to your shell script but builds are incremental with no extra work. I went with awk for index generation and metadata. There's still plenty of room for improvement but it does most of what I want.

on “Ask HN: What's a good static site generator to use for a blog in 2018?”Mine is playing with errorformat (personal blogspam: http://flukus.github.io/vim-errorformat-demystified.html ) and combining this with :cf (read errors from file) or :cb (read errors from buffer) to parse a file/buffer into the quicklist. Great for dealing with log files.

on “Ask HN: What is one Vim trick most people don't know?”Links broken. > But I figured out that if all you have is a title and it's a one-line string, you can just use the `head` and `tail` command line utils to extract either the title string or the markdown body depending on which operation you're in the middle of, and you can still just use bash I took a similar approach with mine ( http://flukus.github.io/building-a-blog-engine.html ) but it get's messy pretty quickly…

on “Saait: a boring HTML page generator”I wrote a couple of months ago about using make with .net (the focus is on make): http://flukus.github.io/2016/11/30/2016_11_30_Rediscovering-... The problem is that I still need VS for debugging, which means build via msbuild. I've heard .net comes with a cmd line debugger (that's compatible with gdb even), though I've never used it.

on “The Lazy Developer's Guide to Command Line Building with C#”It's much faster ( http://flukus.github.io/2016/11/30/2016_11_30_Rediscovering-... ), so is nant or just about any build tool. The problem is visual studio (and other developers) only know about .csproj files.

on “Ask HN: What do you do while your code compiles?”This predates nodejs, every ecosystem has been re-implementing make, poorly. Java has ant/maven/gradle, .net has nant/msbuild/psake. Ruby and python have their own. I wrote a post recently about using make with higher level languages (TLDR- it's much more simpler and more concise than it's "successors"): http://flukus.github.io/2016/11/30/2016_11_30_Rediscovering-...
