What Hacker News says?
> "What's your "top 3" of what Apple needs to do to make PWA installation suck less for iOS users?" It's not so much about installation as it is about app capabilities. Many of the things native apps do easily, Apple makes difficult for web apps. Push notifications is one such thing. (Again, this is changing slowly.) That said, yes, adding web apps to home screen is quite buried in iOS today. > "As a developer, I ex…

HN discussion> PWA install experience is nice and easy on desktop, you're right. Cool, I've only tried on mobile myself. Here's the iOS experience for anyone who hasn't tried PWApp stores: https://imgur.com/a/2VMbvOp > …on mobile, especially on iOS, PWA capabilities are crippled. I say this with some authority, having worked on Microsoft's PWABuilder including its iOS platform. Great project, nice to meet you! I don't think I've…

HN discussionI think you're ignoring the fact that App Store didn't allow PWAs until fairly recently, among a bunch of other things. Mobile web apps aren't slow or clunky or feature-poor and you can design your interface however you want now... except on Apple products. It sounds like your issue is the poor support from Apple, which is exactly what I was getting at. I'd encourage you to read through the blog post I linked here:…

HN discussionhttps://blog.pwabuilder.com/posts/publish-your-pwa-to-the-io... > While WebKit is making progress on PWA support, at the time of this writing, PWAs remain a second-class citizen on iOS. The iOS App Store’s support for PWAs is non-existent, requiring a web view-based solution like PWABuilder’s. > Additionally, because iOS doesn’t allow 3rd party browser engines, your PWA is limited to WebKit’s PWA capabilities, which…

on “What will a Chromium-only Web look like?”PWABuilder already has a "publish to Google Play" feature: https://blog.pwabuilder.com/posts/microsoft-and-google-team-... We work with Google -- and even sync with them monthly -- on this platform. They are very cooperative and helpful. And, PWAs published to Google Play can do push notifications and anything else PWAs normally do, using just standards-based code.

on “Publish your PWA to the iOS App Store”I'm no expert in Capacitor, but from what I understand, different goals. Capacitor aims to give expose native functionality via runtimes and plugins. A kind of mixed web/native hybrid. PWABuilder's aim is more limited in scope: to make PWAs great on iOS. We are not so much concerned about exposing native functionality, and more concerned about making PWA functionality work everywhere. We address some of this in our…
