Why HN links it

HN commenters point to Quick Base as a long-running low-code database platform, an alternative to Airtable and a web equivalent of MS Access. Comments are product recommendations and pricing remarks, not comments on the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 6 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

  1. You might want to look into Quick Base.[1] It is actually the little known elder statesman in this space and includes a lot of features Airtable doesn't currently support. Specific to this thread, one of them is Webhooks.[2] And while the product uses an autonumber for keys by default, you can change it and then import/update against your designated key.[3] [1] https://www.quickbase.com [2] https://help.quickbase.co…

  3. I would suggest taking look at Quick Base [1]. We've been using it for years and I've found it hits the sweet spot for us in the complex spreadsheet/light database space. I've been following Airtable for a while and I have high hopes they continue their upward trajectory. I like where they are going, and they seem like the most likely alternative if we were to move, but Quick Base still seems to have a leg up in a l…

  5. Their lowest price is $500/month billed annually. So it's $6000 day one. And that's the cheap plan - the other two are "contact us for a custom quote". https://www.quickbase.com/plans-and-pricing Airtable (and Stacker) at least let you build for free, then upgrade to monthly accounts at launch. Not affiliated with any of them.

  7. I've tried a lot of these tools. The trouble is that things go extremely well until you hit a wall. With no way to extend them with something like freeform code, the wall doesn't move. The best ones, then, tend to be the ones that have been around long enough, or had enough foresight to have covered various corner cases. The other issue is that most of them have "per user / per month" pricing, which doesn't work for…

  8. There are quite a few products that attempt to be a web based equivalent of Access. The two that seem to be the closest to me are Google's AppMaker ( https://developers.google.com/appmaker/ ) and Bubble.is ( https://bubble.is/ ). I call these two out because they both allow for coding when the "default path" runs into a wall, and both include more than just forms and tables. However, they both still have warts. Appm…
