  1. I was also under attack recently [0]. The little Forgejo instance where I host my code (of several open source packages so it needs to be open) was run into the ground and the disk was filled with generated zip archives. I'm not the only one who has suffered the same fate. For me, the attacks subsided (for now) when I banned Alibaba Cloud's IP range. If you are hosting a Forgejo instance, I strongly recommend settin…

  3. https://blog.nytsoi.net/ No reason to read it, I post quite rarely and just about any (usually technical) things that come to my mind. Most people find it from a search engine when searching for help with different things. My most viewed blog post is about a version incompatibility between PuTTY and OpenSSH. :) I do have a couple of longer post ideas hanging around the back of my mind, but there's just so much else…

  5. I have a blog[0] where I talk about whatever, usually tech related, but quite rarely. It uses my own blog engine[1] but since that's kind of a mess I just had the thought of remaking it, once again. It has very little JS and I'm quite proud of the syntax highlighting and comments (and thus Disqus tracking) being opt-in. Actually I'm more proud of the tech than the writing on the site. :D It runs on Elixir and I writ…

  7. This can be seen quite a bit on Twitter, both in usernames and the tweets themselves. Personally, since I think human behaviour cannot be completely fixed but can be nudged in the correct direction, I'd like to see services implement something like alt text for text, especially usernames. This way people can use different characters to be as creative as they want, but provide an accessible version for screen readers…

  9. Here's one I wrote a blog post[0] about on how to merge two audio tracks of a video into one track without re-encoding the video: ffmpeg -i 'input.mkv' -filter_complex '[0:a:1]volume=0.1[l];[0:a:0][l]amerge=inputs=2[a]' -map '0:v:0' -map '[a]' -c:v copy -c:a libmp3lame -q:a 3 -ac 2 'output.mp4' [0] https://blog.nytsoi.net/2017/12/31/ffmpeg-combining-audio-tr...

  11. I'm a master of half finished projects, so here's one that's half finished and one that's actually published and has a half finished user's guide: a PWA client for the iBroadcast music service [0] and a static blog generator [1] that I use to generate my blog [2]. Since all of my free time programming nowadays is in Gleam, I hope to have better examples for you in the future. :) [0] https://git.ahlcode.fi/nicd/elekt…

  15. Related, I just recently got IPv6 in my home connection and tried to set it up with my EdgeRouter X. It was impossible even though I followed all the online instructions to the letter. I then installed OpenWrt on it and it worked like a charm, with IPv6 out of the box (I did customise my configuration later). I wrote a post about the process for anyone interested [0]. 16. There is, when you aggregate your data to create graphs such as "My most active hours", you will have a problem if your user moves between timezones, if you did not store the actual local wall time. [0] For those cases, you can store the offset or the denormalized local time along with the UTC version. [0] https://blog.nytsoi.net/2022/03/13/utc

  17. Copying what I posted under the original[0] that no one noticed because it's quite relevant to your mention of UTC for past events: The naming of "timestamp with time zone" is one of my favorite pet peeves. It's one of those things that you can say "well technically it's true" about. The article suggests that for past events, UTC and this timestamptz would be acceptable as a general rule, but even there it depends o…

The article suggests that for past events, UTC and this timestamptz would be acceptable as a general rule, but even there it depends on what you will be doing with the data. If you intend to interpret it as a series of local occurrences and try to visualize/summariz…

  19. Don't use it for past times either without thinking what you'll use it for. If you want to generate reports of historical data in the user's timezone at the time of the event , you can't convert back just knowing their current timezone. [0] [0] https://blog.nytsoi.net/2022/03/13/utc
