Why HN links it

HN readers link RÉSONAANCES for particle physics coverage of LHC results, the Higgs, and the 750 GeV diphoton excess. Commenters call it a specialist blog that reports the experimental news in detail.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 23 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. "I do not think, we have to discuss which new physics could explain the discrepancy between CDF and the Standard Model - we first have to understand, why the CDF measurement is in strong tension with all others." That's... cute. I doubt it will stop the theorists from flooding the arxiv with explanaitions in the coming days/weeks. Recall what happened when there was a barely 3 sigma (local) statistical fluctuation i…

  3. I mean, if CMS just hadn't played up their 2.3 sigma excess we probably wouldn't have had the 750 bonanza* so don't pretend there is no blood on the experimental hands :p OPERA is a bit of a special case, but BICEP just straight up declared discovery and wanted the Nobel, have you seen their video of when they tell Linde? * Any time I can, I link to the conclusion : http://resonaances.blogspot.com/2016/06/game-of-th…

  5. A spurious signal at LHC (that disappeared in later runs) that spurred a cottage industry of arXiv submissions trying to explain it. Authors, mostly grad students, quickly submitted hundreds of low quality articles trying to get in on the "discovery". Later articles would cite over 400 previous articles and it became one giant circle jerk. There were even blog posts complaining about the blatant "ambulance chasing".…

  7. It's not censorship, it's just a social seperation of professional concerns. Non-physicists have no chance in hell to understand arxiv papers, in fact most physicists don't have a chance in hell to understand arxiv papers, even the ones from their own field. (I'm saying this as a physicist.) In this case, the MIT TR writes about a bleeding edge, unpublished paper written by a non big-name physicist that will most li…

  9. Any physicists around to elaborate on the prevailing theories for this? The article isn't exactly heavy on the details... Is this suggested particle something like the muon-equivalent of the Higgs? (edit: I've found http://resonaances.blogspot.com/2015/12/a-new-boson-at-750-g... , which at least has more details and more speculations)

  13. That's an utterly misleading headline. The Higgs boson is not excluded in the mass range 115-145 GeV, and there won't be enough evidence for a null result (or discovery) until at least November. More context here: http://resonaances.blogspot.com/2011/08/higgs-wont-come-out-...

For a writeup of this that includes some gasp! physics, see the excellent Résonaances blog http://resonaances.blogspot.com/2011/11/lhcb-has-evidence-of... For something slightly more comprehensible than that, but a lot more useful than bloody wired, try Sean Carroll: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/cosmicvariance/2011/11/14/... 19. Lying about the contents of your talk so you can insult members of a selection comitte that didn’t pick you is not a good way to get a contract renewed, who would have known? Strumia must have really let his victory of the 750 GeV iron throne* dictate his sense of entitlement. *: http://resonaances.blogspot.com/2016/06/game-of-thrones-750-...

I wish I had good recommendations for you. Quanta can be quite good, but it misses sometimes. Most coverage of fundamental physics, especially theory, fails (for obvious reasons) to provide the key context that progress in the field is very slow and getting slower. There are a few excellent specialist blogs, like Resonaances for particle physics, http://resonaances.blogspot.com/ but they are not very accessible to o…

  25. Well, why not? As many point out it has interesting engineering challenges, and gives particle physicists something to do.. However, maybe there is nothing to do after all. One wonders if this is a last hail mary for those clinging to super symmetric particle theories or maybe for multiple higgs ideas. Or just for a job. There doesnt seem any sound reason to me to think the particle desert isnt real and wont stretch…
