What Hacker News says?

  1. > British DSL is far worse than cable in my experience. Define "worse". What ISP were you using? From a peering point of view as described in the article, there are a large number of ISPs buying transit and then selling Internet connections through BT-provided last mile DSL lines. I never suffer from peering congestion, since my (DSL) ISP pride themselves on not having any. For the link from my local exchange to my…

  3. Sometimes CEOs ( or Managing Directors ) do 'sack' customers. The MD of my ISP did so, a few years back: http://revk.www.me.uk/2009/11/being-rude-to-customer.html Quote: "so I've decided to give her 30 days notice, as we can"

  5. Andrews & Arnold is one of the best and most nerd friendly ISPs in the UK: http://aaisp.net.uk/ You can get a good idea of the company's general philosophy from their owner's blog: http://revk.www.me.uk/ Unfortunately they are quite expensive compared to the bigger ISPs but in their case you really do get what you pay for.

  7. They have already added the 'active choice' option: Tell us which you would like: * Unfiltered Internet access - no filtering of any content within the A&A network - you are responsible for any filtering in your own network * Censored Internet access - restricted access to unpublished government mandated filter list - still cannot guarantee kids don't access porn With the latter choice informing the user: Sorry, for…

  9. > And if all ISPs are to be legally obliged to "provide" this filtering, A&A will not be an exception This is what they are doing: http://revk.www.me.uk/2013/07/active-choice.html I suspect they'll get away with it because they're not a popular consumer option. Not sure if Virgin would.

  11. Another happy A&A customer here. In a world of every ISP being amazing, they'd take the crown as the best one. I get an amazingly advanced web UI which lets me do things nobody can do on any other ISPs (advanced options on my line etc). I can get a text/email/tweet whenever my line goes down and back up. I can hop on IRC and talk to sales/tech or even the owner (this[1] is his blog, by the way - He writes a lot, I r…

  13. Ditch the big providers and sign up with A&A [1][2]. RevK (Adrian Kennard)[3] doesn't put up with any shit and won't be intimidated by politicians who clearly have no clue as to how the Internet works. They cost a bit more but you get what you pay for. I don't work there, just a happy customer. [1]: http://www.aa.net.uk/broadband.html [2]: http://www.aa.net.uk/about.html [3]: http://revk.www.me.uk/

  15. If it is opt-out, it is censorship. This was established through heavy lobbying and threat of legislation. And then there's the one where all major ISPs block an unpublished list of websites that are deemed "illegal". That one was established by court order, and the only way you can opt out of it is by switching to a small ISP. Here's the blog of one such small ISP, which is well worth reading: http://revk.www.me.uk…

  17. "Net neutrality" isn't really going to be a problem in the UK, since the incumbent (BT) is required to sell just the last mile bandwidth to other ISPs and we have a choice of many ISPs to provide the backhaul. I can simply use an ISP that doesn't mess about. See this post from the owner of a small, highly technically clued ISP: http://revk.www.me.uk/2010/11/two-speed-internet.html In the US, AIUI the problem is that…
