What Hacker News says?

  1. Sometimes, the devs can sneak in a hidden fix. For example, remember back when VS 2012 made menus ALL CAPS? Officially, that was the brave new world everybody was supposed to live in ( https://devblogs.microsoft.com/visualstudio/a-design-with-al... ). Users hated it with a passion. And then it turned out that there's an undocumented registry key to re-enable the old behavior, that was leaked without much fanfare ( h…

  3. Git is pretty agnostic to storage. There are implementations that use RDBMS for storage quite successfully (TFS/VSTS). It wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of queries can be significantly faster to perform over git repos stored this way. https://www.richard-banks.org/2014/02/tfs-internals-how-does...

  11. As a member of the VS team (but not one who is in charge of making these decisions) I can't comment in any official capacity. I can say I am not a fan of the ALL CAPS menus, but, strangely enough, my personal opinion doesn't drive decisions in a multi-million dollar product unit :). I will however just leave this here: http://www.richard-banks.org/2012/06/how-to-prevent-visual-s... . This is of course not officially…

  12. The System/3x family and RPG were designed for customers who were migrating off unit record equipment. Unit record equipment was "programmed" by wiring plug boards, and the unit record machine would filter, transform, collate (etc.) each card in a stack of input cards by applying the rules specified by the wiring of the plug board. With the fixed formatting and "program cycle", RPG was intended as a sort of skeumorp…
