What Hacker News says?
Yep that's also my experience. Except HN because it does not use *** Cloudflare because it knows it is not necessary. I just wrote a blog titled "Do Not Put Your Site Behind Cloudflare if You Don't Need To" [1]. [1]: https://huijzer.xyz/posts/123/

HN discussion> but I do admit Forgejo looks very interesting to self-host. I've been self-hosting it for a few years now and can definitely recommend. It has been very reliable. I even have a runner running. Full tutorial at https://huijzer.xyz/posts/55/installing-forgejo-with-a-separ... .

HN discussionIt’s the same now. I’ve spent arguably too much time trying to avoid Python and it has cost me a whole lot of time. You keep running into bugs and have to implement much more yourself if you go off the beaten path (see also [1]). I don’t regret it since I learned a lot, but it’s definitively not always the easiest path. To this day I wonder whether maybe I should have taken the simple route. [1]: https://huijzer.xyz…

HN discussionHence why I wrote a post on 18th of Nov (previous Cloudflare outage): https://huijzer.xyz/posts/123/do-not-put-your-site-behind-cl... . That blog post made it to the front page of HN and my site did not go down. Nor did any DDoS network take the site out even though I also challenged them last time by commenting that I would be okay with a DDoS. I would figure out a way around it. In general, marketing often works v…

HN discussionI did similar things last year [1]. Also I tried running arbitrary binaries and that worked too. You could even run them in the GPTs. It was okay back then but not super reliable. I should try again because the newer models definitively follow prompts better from what I’ve seen. [1]: https://huijzer.xyz/posts/openai-gpts/

HN discussionProbably a good idea to explicitly pin GitHub Actions to commit hashes as I wrote about a few days ago: https://huijzer.xyz/posts/jas/ Also put as much as possible in bash or justfile instead of inside the yaml. It avoids vendor lock-in and makes local debugging easier.

HN discussion> Uploading Binaries and execute them Agreed! It's seriously overlooked right now. I threw in typst (a document formatter like LaTeX) and was surprised that it worked [1]. Startup times for the sandbox are a bit slow though with about 8-10 seconds startup time. I also saw that they just added a beta for mentioning custom GPTs with `@`. I really hope these things will move forward more. It shows that there is still a…

HN discussionI just finished a blog post with some thoughts on AI’s future [1] and the surprising conclusion was that most big tech companies probably have much bigger problems than whether researchers leave or not. As Taleb and DeepSeek’s CEO point out, usually when you have a disruptive technology, then the incumbents will be left behind. Cursor AI and DeepSeek are a sign of new players coming out of nowhere and beating the in…

HN discussionAnyone here who knows how much of this can be handled by an intermediary like CloudFlare? Setting it up with Google auth took me only 30 minutes or so for static pages (details at https://huijzer.xyz/posts/static-site-auth/ ), but I have no idea how good it would be for securing a service in production.

HN discussionI just bought a Raspberry Pi 4 1 GB memory with aluminum case, aluminum NVME adapter, and a 64 GB SSD for about 80 euros. With microsd it’s even cheaper. 4 GB RAM would be about 120 euros. The 1 GB RAM replaces one Forgejo runner that was in Hetzner. With €5 per month, I will earn this investment back in less than two years. After the price increase, this period will only shorten! I also wrote about this at https://…

HN discussionDidn't see a pdf of your thesis, except on your web-site[1]. But the version there (at least as it renders on my machine), has a lot of formatting issues. For one egregious example, look at the letter spacing in the title and legend of Figure 2.2 (page 27): "civilia ns", "Pe rs ona lity s core". I'm sure the content is great, but using it as an example of Typst prowess, seems ill-advised. [1] https://huijzer.xyz/fil…

HN discussionI have moved to self-host Forgejo a few years ago and I can also highly recommend. It's working great. I have posted a tutorial [1] (verified last month that it still works), and recently moved from Hetzner to 2 Raspberry Pi's for hosting the server and the runner [2]. It's great. Really rock solid. Has been more reliable and faster than GitHub. [1]: https://huijzer.xyz/posts/55/installing-forgejo-with-a-separ... [2…

HN discussionIn most cases, I just add a blog post for such things. For example, Syncthing on Debian notes [1] or using Spleeter AI to remove background sound from a long audio track [2]. This is why I switched back from static site to a Wordpress-like site [3], so that I can quickly publish notes from my phone. [1]: https://huijzer.xyz/posts/149/setup-a-syncthing-service-on-d...
