Why HN links it
HN readers link it as examples of habit-building, such as a 135-day early-rising experiment, and as an argument against utopian views of free online education. Commenters also cite it as a source for a scanning workflow.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 8 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
Looking at your blog http://ryanwaggoner.com/ , I can see why you would come to his defence. You're obviously very much into self-help books. That stuff doesn't work for everyone.

HN discussionnah, just new habits. Like this guy who got up at 3:45am for 135 days: http://ryanwaggoner.com/2011/01/135-days-of-getting-up-at-34...

HN discussionI don't care one way or the other. However I do think it's slightly disingenuous to brush off a comment about affiliate payments in such a flippant way, when monetisation seems to provide at least some motivation for writing the blog ( http://ryanwaggoner.com/2010/11/october-2010-blog-income-upd... ).

HN discussionA million dollars is actually not enough to secure a dignified existence in the US. Nonsense: http://ryanwaggoner.com/2010/08/how-to-retire-at-30-on-1-mil... Not to face bankruptcy if a major health problem arises? Health insurance isn't that expensive unless you have a pre-existing condition [1]. I won't talk about the college and home ownership questions other than to say that families have figured out how to live…

HN discussionIronically, I also wrote a post on this exact subject a few months ago: http://ryanwaggoner.com/2010/08/how-to-retire-at-30-on-1-mil... I was really responding to the claim that you can't retire on $1m in that post, whereas the post I wrote today is more about the idea that you might not need to "retire" at all...

HN discussionI thought this was a good post: http://ryanwaggoner.com/2010/08/why-free-online-education-wo... Presents an interesting case against a lot of technical Utopian ideas about tech/ed, highlighted the resistance to change in a lot of entrenched interest groups e.g. parent pressure isn't stressed nearly enough by most. It is a well thought out articulation of an interesting POV. I really wasn't trying to be content polic…

HN discussionSteve Pavlina also talks about this in another post, and I did it for a month to train myself to get up at 345am, which I did with 99% consistency for the next 4.5 months [1]. Starting in Jan, I've been getting up at 430am instead, but this technique of training your subconscious is one of the most effective hacks I've ever tried. 1. http://ryanwaggoner.com/2011/01/135-days-of-getting-up-at-34...

HN discussionI agree with the sentiment of not getting caught up second-guessing yourself, but I think that the line of reasoning you're espousing destroys any hope of learning from past mistakes, and by extension, diminishes the importance of carefully considering future decisions. If I don't look back and learn from my mistakes because I never know what would have happened in the other case, why bother putting any thought into…

HN discussionAbsolutely. I use a Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner[1], along with the software that comes with it. Automatically OCRs both sides and then stores it on disk. I don't even have to name files as they are full-text-searchable in Finder on OSX. Check out Ryan Waggoner's post[2] on this (where I got the idea from). HN discussion> Has anybody _exclusively_ begun using ebooks? I have. I got a Kindle, and I love it. It's a no-brainer for me. I move relatively often, like to travel, and commute to work by train. I mostly read non-fiction books that are all (or mostly) text. Re: e-readers vs tablets The e-reader will give you less physical strain due to the lighter weight and e-ink screen. And less strain = more pleasure, while reading. It's th…

HN discussionInteresting idea...just for reference, I ran it on a recent blog post of mine: http://www.ryanwaggoner.com/2008/08/how-simple-is-too-simple... (sorry for the spam :-) Overall, I would say that it was most useful when it was pointing out things like passive voice or cliches, and less useful when telling me to replace relatively simple words or phrases with even simpler ones. Some of the words were things like: "feedb…

HN discussionI didn't write anything about doctors. I just submitted the link. Each comment here is submitted by a different hacker news member. The reason why I submitted the link is because over the past few days there's been a lot of articles on hacker news about how to work as a freelance coder. One of the routes they spoke about on those articles was to apply to craigslist jobs for freelance work. http://ryanwaggoner.com/20…
