What Hacker News says?

  1. It is possible to buy a different non-AGPL license to MongoDB -- https://www.mongodb.com/community/licensing . With RethinkDB it seems completely impossible to do so. I begged and pleaded: http://sagemath.blogspot.com/2016/10/rethinkdb-must-relicens... . I just spent most of my time during the last two months rewriting SageMathCloud to use PostgreSQL instead of RethinkDB, with the catalyst for doing this being the A…

  3. The GNU Affero GPLv3 has been a recurring topic during RethinkDB's existence, but I cannot substantiate the same having been an issue for MongoDB. Links appreciated. 7. It was open source from the start, but under AGPL which is a fairly restrictive open source license. I remember diving through the code trying to debug bugs in RethinkDB when using it in production long before they went out of business. 9. dmytton you have done a FANTASTIC job on your pricing page ( https://www.serverdensity.com/pricing/ )! I just got screwed by DataDog's confusing pricing page ( http://sagemath.blogspot.com/2016/07/datadogs-pricing-dont-m... ). Your's is the ultimate example of what to do right. WOW.

I believe that Sage was modeled after Magma, which isn't important, but I highly recommend this long blog post by William Stein[1] talking about his motivations, the problem of basing academic work on closed source software, and in the case of Magma, the potential politics of even being able to get the software. 17. I'm a University professor who does much work funded by the NSF (millions of dollars), whose university (Univ of Washington) is on that list. My tech transfer office tried hard to make me keep some of my software work closed source and succeeded for years (see http://sagemath.blogspot.com/2014/08/what-is-sagemathcloud-l... ). In December I realized to my surprise that some of my NSF grants that funded my work had an…

  19. In December, I open sourced SageMathCloud ( https://cloud.sagemath.com ), after it had been closed source for years. SageMathCloud (SMC) is a "SaaS product" in which you collaboratively edit IPython notebooks, LaTeX documents, Sage worksheets, R code, etc., in a browser. It is not yet a business, though it may become a business soon. Here's what happened with open sourcing. It was politically contentious for SMC to…

  21. Possible donate the credits to an open source project? I suggest contacting @williamstein [0] who has been actively seeking help to fund Sage Math Cloud [1]. See post here [2] and here [3] for reference. I'm living on credit cards -- I have no NSF grant support anymore, and SageMathCloud is still losing a lot of money every month, and I'm unhappy about this situation. It was either completely quit working on SMC and…
