What Hacker News says?

  1. Technically it's just 128 bits, it doesn't matter how you represent it. I've written this IPv4ES solution, which allows you to use 128 bit addresses using IPv4 format. https://www.sami-lehtinen.net/blog/ipv4es-the-perfect-soluti...

  7. I've done also some tests, and so far in most of cases SQLite3 has been fastest option and it's also trivial to manage compared to other options. SQLite3 is absolutely awesome. Until you'll need concurrent writes. It's also important to notice that configuration options will make a big performance difference. http://www.sami-lehtinen.net/blog/sqlite3-performance-python... http://www.sami-lehtinen.net/blog/database-p…

  13. FAT32 isn't often included these days in Linux FS benchmarks [0] but some older benchmarks [1] also show noticeable performance differences, especially when the workload is more meaningful than copy files. Lack of features does not imply efficient design. Caching was optional with Windows 98 and sometimes was turned off by default, depending on how the drive was formatted (partition type) and the IO driver (BIOS, LB…

  17. I was personally quite sure that trackers and other download sites would be replaced with distributed systems. Instead sites like TPB and others continue to use centralized systems. I'm of course pro distributed & anonymous systems, that's the reason why I've been studying those for years. I'm kind of disappointed how little those are used, if used at all. When TPB guys said they would make something cool, I natural…

  19. New phenomenon? I think it was first VOIP apps I ever used with Windows 3.11 which already had some protocol level tricks to work around TCP limitations. Like using ICMP and or UDP traffic. Hardly news. I've been thinking this since reading about TCP for the very first time. I've even published a concept of "Bandwidth Hog", which is transfer protocol designed to optimize your transport. By stealing others bandwidth,…

  21. I've usually done intentional fragmentation by filling disk with small files and deleting those while growing a new file to claim those blocks. Works basically with every file system. Some examples where I've used such method. People often claim that fragmentation doesn't affect SSD drives, but that's not true: http://www.sami-lehtinen.net/blog/ssd-file-fragmentation-myt... This is slightly related. How contiguously…
