What Hacker News says?

  1. For those who don't want to navigate Twitter for whatever reason (tracking, slows down your browser, bad UI, etc.), here's the content from the thread (the images and videos are still Twitter-hosted, by the way): ----------------------------------- It's done! Winamp2-js ( https://jordaneldredge.com/projects/winamp2-js/ ) finally supports all three windows! To celebrate, here's a list of some of the cool things it ca…

  3. That's good to keep in mind. No IE support for `appearance` but it can be used in such a way that it's just a more ordinary input in that browser. There are still more things you can do within a label. This is a good article on improving methods of visually hiding the actual inputs. https://www.sarasoueidan.com/blog/inclusively-hiding-and-sty...

  5. This is awesome! Twitter has been my goto for posting TILs for about as long. Now I regret not collecting them in a more coherent format like this. Sara Soueidan has a similar log oriented toward UI work: https://www.sarasoueidan.com/today-i-learned/

  9. Sara Soueidan's is pretty great - https://sarasoueidan.com/ - especially the speaking section. She's amazing generally though, so it's quite a high bar! I had some good feedback on mine as well - https://tim.fyi - and I'm pretty happy with it (love to hear what other people think too though). After the intro though, it's more about highlighting recent specific projects and talks and articles, rather than acting as a…

  11. The flash of unstyled SVG can be fixed by setting explicit view box (the "viewBox" attribute) and viewport (the "width" and "height" attributes): https://www.sarasoueidan.com/blog/svg-style-inheritance-and-...

  13. SVG is an untapped technology. It functions as an embedded document. When used within the Object tag, it can run javascript and CSS and ideally renders complex graphics with a much smaller payload. Also, they look amazing on all devices as they use the browser's rendering pipeline. SVG has been a fully supported standard for years. https://sarasoueidan.com/blog/art-directing-svg-object/

  15. Because people who write SVG's usually don't know about the viewBox property[0]. They just use illustrator to draw the shape and then export it. [0] https://sarasoueidan.com/blog/svg-coordinate-systems/

  19. My understanding is that a button used like this is already accessible. However a button that looks like this: <button type="button"> <img src="/delete.png" alt="Delete post" /> </button> Is not. Screen readers will read the simple text on the button, but any descendants of the button will be considered purely presentational (even if as in the example above the img tag includes an 'alt' attribute, it won't be read).…
