MySQL 8.0 actually added support for functional indexes, but I found out the hard way that they don't work the same way as indexing generated columns. For me the biggest issue were the caveats around using the indexed column in conditions, which resulted in the index not being used in surprising situations. Anyways, I had to revert to generated columns which was a shame because it was a feature I had looked forward…

HN discussionSure! I've actually though that it was a relatively small number :) I've reached 8k users around 1/1.5 years ago, so the times are even shorter. I did not plan for exposure (audience size); however, looking at the stats, I think that there is a clear indication. My articles are often more or less deep dives into mainstream topics; I believe that the consequences of this approach are two: 1. the articles get exposure…

on “Ask HN: Are blog comments a thing of the past?”Wow, this is horrible advice. I'm a Debian Developer and an Ubuntu Core Developer. What this will do is create a package that doesn't properly handle dependencies and be incredibly fragile. Debian and Ubuntu automatically resolve shared library dependencies are build time through dpkg-shlibs and friends. Debian's maintainer manual is likely the most detailed guide: https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/star…

on “Building binary deb packages: a practical guide”I wrote long ago about writing competion scripts in any language: https://saveriomiroddi.github.io/Using-scripts-in-any-langua... . Although it's not ideal (one ends up duplicating the arguments parsing logic of the program), it's actually not complicated, just some boilerplate.

on “Creating a bash completion script (2018)”This is a thorough guide: https://saveriomiroddi.github.io/An-in-depth-dbas-guide-to-m... The encoding/collation problem is now settled - the problem has been legacy, and especially, the somewhat mismanaged, rushed, change in 8.0.

on “How to support full Unicode in MySQL databases”I second this one. This was a great book.
