  1. 1-3 remind me of a great "I Can Has Cheezburger?" anecdote about being a successful CTO: http://www.scottporad.com/2010/11/12/what-it-really-means-to...

  3. The author seems to think gmail would have had a seamless integration as well. http://www.scottporad.com/2013/03/15/why-is-gmail-not-part-o... There seems to be cognitive dissonance on people's aversion to strategic opportunism.

  5. Tom-- Thanks for sparking the debate. Allow me a request, a comment and a question in response... Request: I ask you to distinguish Agile from Scrum. Agile is a set of principles. Scrum is a methodology, or process, based on those principles. Comment: For my teams, Scrum has worked more effectively than other processes.* The point of my post was not that "Agile works, if only people would do it right". That is a mis…

  7. It's still not permission marketing. I'm trying to think of a way to turn this around so that it mirrors real world experience more accurately. For example, what if I could "ask" my social network for a recommendation, instead of having it pushed onto me? More here: http://www.scottporad.com/2010/04/28/improving-dual-incentiv...

  9. Tony-- I like this...but I think #7 rises above the rest in terms of importance. Or, at least it does for me personally. Invariably, startups get hard, so when the going gets tough it's hard to keep on chugging along if you don't care. This is what happened to me...I wrote about a startup I was involved with once ( http://www.scottporad.com/2009/07/13/the-key-lesson-from-a-s... ) where we had a good idea, but we did…

  11. Memory of the exact context escapes me, but somewhere a few months ago here on HN, a user shared an idea of how Google+ could have leveraged their massive Google Reader user base to create a publisher's dream social network. The argument was super compelling and I remember thinking it would have made complete sense, but instead ended up with the nightmare that became Google+, and a ton of pissed off former-users of…

  17. I've been the CTO or VPE at several startups (some very successful, others total failures). I'm going to give you a checklist with only three things on it, and these are the foundations for any startup CTO. As you will see, they have nothing to do with technology or engineering. As a CTO with "a growing team of engineers", the most important jobs in your role have nothing to do with engineering. 1. Define clear outc…

  21. At first, I thought, "Why would I want this? My blog (shameless plug: http://scottporad.com ) never gets that much traffic. Then it occurred to me why: we all hope to get slashdotted at some point. That's how our blog readership grows, right? But, when that happens, if my server goes down, then what's the point? So, basically, this is an insurance policy, and most likely well worth it.
