Why HN links it
HN readers link seanh.cc for posts on restic backups (forget and prune policies, cloud storage costs) and the Terminal Velocity note-taking tool. Commenters cite these posts as sources rather than judging them.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 4 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.
I blog, you blog, weblog.
What Hacker News says?
no, you have to run "restic forget" with the policy you want (keep last X, last monthly Y, etc.) followed up with a "restic prune". Or you can pass "--prune" to the "forget" command I think. You don't always want to forget/prune snapshots. Especially if you're using a cloud service like B2. It can easily cost you more to prune than actual storage costs if you're not careful. HN discussion+1 for Restic. I'm only just barely scratching the surface of its use, and it's still just amazing. Here's the article I referenced: https://www.seanh.cc/2022/04/03/restic , though it looks like you're doing a lot more wizardry than that!
