What Hacker News says?
Perhaps someone else can parse this better than me. I can make sense of one of these lines: "Criminals break laws; laws are often injust. The War on Drugs, and mandatory sentencing." I think behind this line is lurking the belief that America's prisons are full of Humboldt County potheads, or something like that. The typical American in jail for drug offenses isn't a system administrator who made the mistake of toki…

on “The Caging of America”You'll have to cast out that beam in your eye first. Cabrini-Green is no big deal? http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com/2010/10/end-of-cabrini-gre... Your choice: grow up without a "right" to vote (not actually a right but a power, and of no direct value to you). Or grow up in Cabrini-Green. Oh, and my party: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacobitism Democracy is working out pretty much as we always expected. Don't you t…

on “Gunshot detection system transforms and raises issues ”"A lot of comments on the Second City Cop blog - http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com - have indicated that law enforcement officers in Chicago are becoming extremely hesitant to act because they are worried about how their actions may look on camera." Good.

on “Illegal to record an on-duty officer?”I agree that police abuse is a problem, and I also agree that laws like the ones mentioned in the article are an obscene violation of our liberties; however, I'm starting to see the problems that recording officers can cause. I was recently leaving North Avenue Beach after playing beach volleyball when a gang fight erupted. Hundreds of kids started mobbing each other and causing all kinds of mayhem. I got out of the…

on “Illegal to record an on-duty officer?”Stross answers his own question - he just doesn't want to go there. Turn your back on the Enlightenment's ideological values. Until the 21st century can accomplish this, it'll stay a tired, stale clone of the 20th. SF and even fantasy are existentially dependent on plausibility. The more rules you break, the more you have to obey the ones you don't break. How can anyone find Enlightenment values plausible in 2012? W…
