  1. Wow, Justin, cheers. It looks like the first version was available ~ mid November 2005 (via https://secretgeek.net/snapper_wins ) and available from the TimeSnapper.com domain from ~ November 28 2005. ( https://secretgeek.net/TimeSnapper_ready_at_last ) So you got in very early! The professional version was a year or two later. cheers

  5. A friend of mine got his domain stolen recently. He believes his gmail was brute-forced through a known vulnerability/feature when POP is enabled http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2009/Jul/254 . He did a write up http://secretgeek.net/sg_hijack_1.asp and here http://secretgeek.net/sg_hijack_2.asp . As soon as this happened to him I turned on 2-factor auth and it works very well.

  11. I'm pretty sure Atwood cribbed that wholesale from Jakob Nielsen's ancient advise: http://www.useit.com/papers/webwriting/ But Atwood is truly inane in his own special way: http://secretgeek.net/jatwood_how_to.asp

  15. But mac os versions all have numbers that go along with them in addition to the name. It's the same system used by the Linux Kernel (i.e. 5.2 / Bobtail Squid), Ubuntu (18.04 / Bionic Beaver), and many other pieces of software. Most of the time the numbers are more useful, but there are occasions where having a non-numeric designation is helpful. Apple's real naming sin is that they don't enumerate all of their hardw…

  17. A friend of mine got his gmail hacked - he believes through POP password brute forcing vulnerability. The person or persons who stole it used it to steal his domain. 19. From a comment I made 2 years ago when this paper was brought up: I've been fairly skeptical of this paper ever since reading Alan Kay's rebuttal: http://www.secretgeek.net/camel_kay.asp I trust Kay much more than these authors on matters of computer science, teaching, or ideas in general. To expand a bit, I've since mentored over a dozen students and I've found that in most cases of students who couldn't program we…

  29. Yeh, myself and another guy are writing a 'codesmackdown' site (source code here: http://bitbucket.org/OJ/codesmackdown ) as a side-project, not as a money-maker, entirely for fun. Life keeps getting in the way though. So far the only good thing to come out of this project is that I wrote a cheatsheet for mercurial, as I'm a noob and keen to help other noobs ;-) http://www.secretgeek.net/mercurial_flow.asp
