Too few sampled comments (5) to say how often HN recommends it.?

Why HN links it

Linked posts on software engineering: structuring programming problems, Android tooling (IntelliJ, Android Studio, Eclipse), automated testing with Spoon and Robolectric, and cognitive complexity. Comments cite them without judging the writing.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 5 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Yeah, I like the way you're going. I haven't spent much time thinking about how to fit in software engineering, but I did try to think about how to structure programming issues (which is probably the first step if you want to eventually get to a software engineering). https://www.sep.com/sep-blog/2017/04/25/objective-code-quali... It's missing a conclusion / wrapping it all up (which hopefully I can get to soonish),…

  3. The only feature that really excites me is the Gradle support. Things like the 9patch editor seem horribly misplaced (you probably don't want your devs to be editing those...) and others seem so situational (the autocompleting sdk version - a one line config value that you set once per project). Android Studio is not really usable as an IDE if you want to have a fully featured test suite because of the weird, half-i…

  5. I really like it when people become concerned about cognitive complexity. I think it's one of the significantly ignored concepts in our industry and if we ever find a way to address the issue (either with some sort of cognitive complexity solution or some sort of big oh like math framework that describes how things are complex) then the future generations of software engineers will look at what we're currently doing…

  7. If you plan to use the best-of-breed Android testing tools (namely Robolectric), Android Studio is not ready for serious use. Eclipse is not great, but at least everything works. I am optimist about the future of Android Studio (and the switch to Gradle), but if I were starting a new Android project today, I would still stick with Eclipse - you will avoid a lot of headaches and hacky workarounds. http://www.sep.com/…

  9. This is not terribly difficult to get running locally (at a smaller scale). Square has a tool called Spoon[0] that makes it really easy to run a test suite across a bunch of devices. On a recent project, we had 5-7 devices plugged into a spare box that would run a test suite on every push. It worked out great and the ability to capture screenshots was really helpful for the design team to help spot strange UI issues…
