HN discussionDude, just try it. Close your browser and monitor your network traffic. Compile a hello world with a unique text string. Run it. It calls home the first time you run it. Then it doesn't. If you are not connected to the internet, it does not call home indeed. Here is a concrete description of this experiment: https://sigpipe.macromates.com/2020/macos-catalina-slow-by-d... HN discussionYes, this happens and it does cause slowdowns[1]. It can take several seconds to check an application if you're on a very slow internet connection. The same happens on Windows through SmartScreen, but you can easily turn that off[2] at least. As far as I know, you can't disable this on macOS. HN discussionI also got an M1 Max. The chip is amazing. Compile times are a lot faster than on the 6 core Intel Mac mini I had before. But at this point it's really held back by Apple's software. Anything related to Apple ID and iCloud regularly hangs 30-60 seconds, showing a spinner with no progress indicator whatsoever. Apps randomly take 20 seconds to launch, maybe because of [1]? The Open/Save dialog taking 30 seconds to sho…

HN discussion> Mac keeps a list of (hashes of) apps that are not allowed to run. That's the XProtect blocklist, it's been around pretty long and hasn't caused any issues that I'm aware of. > bug caused it not to cache the list long enough and it started causing problems when it couldn’t phone home What changed is that since Catalina macOS additionally makes a synchronous check the first time you open an app. For certain things t…
