What Hacker News says?
Lemme use this opportunity to link Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/ Available for linux, mobile, online and of course static-linked exe. Also as opposed to Windows Minesweeper, mines.exe is guaranteed to be solvable every time.

HN discussionIndeed. I would really love to recommend Keepass, but their website is really ugly and makes the impression of a non-polished software - even though Keepass is absolute mature and fine. On the other hand, the PuTTY website is also everything but polished, but people have always been using it. Also, I suspect that most people will get it through the third-party site "www.putty.org" instead of the real PuTTY website,…

HN discussionMeh, other than the crossword, the other ones are fairly trivial games. Simon Tatham's puzzle pack [0] for example has 5x more games for free and ported to most platforms. [0] https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/

HN discussion> Every contributor is valuable, it's in the name, the definition of "contribute". No. I definitely seen people who created multitude of misleading bug reports, flood of stupid feature requests. I personally did a bit of both. There are people who do both repetitively, fill issue reports without filling requested fields. Or open issue again when their previous report was closed. I got once bug report where someone w…

HN discussionThanks for pointing this out; I'd forgotten about that (having given up on Putty after discovering the difficulty of sharing configuration https://stackoverflow.com/q/13023920 ). Putty.org links to the Putty download page with a disclaimer separating promotion of Bitvise software below. The contrast in marketing language between "source code [...] developed and supported by a group of volunteers" vs. "developed and…

HN discussionUltimately this probably helps increase the overall internet security. Although in recent years it was available from a TLS secured source [0], the putty.org site (which might or might not be operated by the maintainers) is still not https secured. Given that probably tens or hundreds of thousands downloaded it from there (imagine, getting an SSH client from an unknown source!) I'm surprised not more happened. Other…

HN discussionNot strictly mathematical, and maybe not exactly 5 year old difficulty (some of these are HARD) but here goes: https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/puzzles/ There's an Android version of these puzzles and Linux packages (usually called "sgt-puzzles" or something similar). Apparently (I just found this out) they also work on the browser, which is pretty cool.
