> After checking out Sketch, I don't believe they offer a one-time payment option any longer You still can get it, but only after contacting support: "We can still offer Mac-only licenses as new purchases to people who, for legal or security reasons, cannot use cloud-based products. However, they only offer access to the Mac app, and don’t get all the other benefits of a subscription. Get in touch with us if you’re…

HN discussionYeah trying to switch from VSCode to Nova was the opposite experience for me. For a while, I had that same nostalgia... everything looked great... but then, nothing really worked, the plugins were all kind of bad (half of my work is Golang, which Nova does not support), and VSCode allows you to have the same stuff on all three major platforms. I realized the Mac software from your studios looked great, and yeah had…

HN discussionAlso Sketch [1]. Everyone abandoned it when Figma became the pOpUlAr tool, but I still use it every day, nearly 15 years later and it's continued to improve. [1] https://sketch.com

HN discussionAh, thank you! It looks like Agenda[0] does use that model. Here's a blog post with details[1] in which they mention that Sketch[2] also uses the same business model (with some minor variations). tl;dr: you buy the app and 1 year of updates. You keep what you pay for. I wonder if it would be viable for an app like photoshop to have a feature marketplace. You start with a very basic version of the app and you buy the…

HN discussionInterestingly, no one asked me what software I used when I created diagrams in the vector graphics app sketch[0], but once I started using ascii diagrams using monodraw[1], everyone wanted to know what I was using. I find the aesthetic extremely "precious;" that's why I do it. Affectations are memorable. 0: https://www.sketch.com/ 1: https://monodraw.helftone.com/

HN discussionDefinitely depends on the platform. On Linux it's probably great, but on macOS at least, I've yet to see a GTK app that doesn't feel super clunky. GTK breaks lots of expectations about how things should behave on macOS (shortcuts, standard menus, buttons, etc). Gimp or Inkscape are good examples. On the other hand those are examples of what a "native" app is expected to look like: https://www.sketch.com https://paw.…

HN discussionMy twitter feed has some remote Elixir jobs popping up from time to time. I just saw this 10min ago: https://www.sketch.com/jobs/backend-developer/ . I don't think it's more difficult to get an Elixir job than, lets say Rust one.

HN discussionYou can, actually. See "Mac-only license" in their pricing [0]. Just as before, you get one year of updates. True, when Sketch started switching to a subscription model, they've buried the link to renew the license very deep so it was really hard to find, but I guess they've came back to their senses and it is now available right on the pricing page. HN discussionMac is required for designing, which in pratice most designers are using in the vast majority of organizations, so it's not really an issue. For feedback and handoff the web tool is free and works in any OS that has a browser. https://www.sketch.com/handoff/
