What Hacker News says?

  1. One typical way to resolve this is to use Voluntary Oblivious Compliance (VOC). In this capability-based pattern, every storage service could provide an opaque handler to a user that represents their authorization and it can be used to restrict on which documents indexing is done. http://wiki.erights.org/wiki/Walnut/Secure_Distributed_Compu... http://www.skyhunter.com/marcs/ewalnut.html#proofOfPurchase If the opaque…

  3. Is there a description/examples of these anywhere? Combex doesn't provide a lot of info and I couldn't find anything on PowerBox. From the description of Combex ( http://www.skyhunter.com/marcs/capabilityIntro/ ): > Suppose you were running a capability-secure operation system, or that your mail system was written in a capability-secure programming language. In either case, each time an executable program in your em…

  5. The Gentle Seduction is a similar short story in regards to singularity that The Egg reminded me of http://www.skyhunter.com/marcs/GentleSeduction.html

  7. And "The Last Answer", which ironically ends with a question while "The Last Question" ends with an answer. And a bunch of others that aren't quite similar except that they're short, provocative scifi. Here's my list of favorites: * Ted Chiang - Understand - http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/stories/under.htm * Ted Chiang - Exhalation - http://www.nightshadebooks.com/Downloads/Exhalation%20-%20Te... * Ted Chiang - Hell…

  9. I think the key here is to introduce the concept slowly because saying "stop ageing" freaks people out. A lot of people have this idea of what "natural" means and stopping ageing just doesn't sit right with them. I think a better strategy would be to call it "eradicating diseases and higher quality of life towards the end of your life", both of which is really ageing research, but with a better spin. We've been exte…

  17. I do not see this as a bad thing. I would rather live happily ever after than take life-ending risks. That said, I disagree with the premise. Any true form of immortality would virtualize us. As individuals we would be able to take risks as never before. Paragliding through dangerous canyons? Why not? Worst case scenario your fleshy avatar dies, and you wait a few weeks in a virtual utopia as a new one is printed. A…

  25. So the machines put them on a barren planet in the middle of interstellar space with no source of natural light? Seems like a pretty desolate end for humanity. I'd rather merge my consciousness with the probes and explore, something like this: http://www.skyhunter.com/marcs/GentleSeduction.html
