  1. Why not go back to WAP & WML? ;) There is QML (see https://www.canonic.com ) and Gemini (see https://gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/ ) as alternatives.

  3. Gemini protocol is lightweight alternative to HTTP which concentrates on the actual content (like Gopher). I spent couple of nights just browsing random people’s pages and it felt like fresh air – and very reminiscient of the nineties web! Give Gemini a try: https://gemini.circumlunar.space/ The Lagrange browser is quite nice to browse Gemini: https://gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/

Centralization is key to imparting knowledge, establishing law and order, and securing our existence through terraforming the planet on an immense scale — which is what separates humans from animals. Scott Alexander uses the example of the US interstate highway system to defend the type of “centralization” which has been so crucial in humanity’s increasing standard of living [1]: > I like Seeing Like A State as much…

If we're going minimal, then why not Finger as a Twitter replacement? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger_(protocol) Finger communities/hosting: https://finger.farm/ https://happynetbox.com/ https://plan.cat/ (thank you gbrown for reminding me of this) browsers that support finger (in addition to other protocols such as Gopher and Gemini): https://kristall.random-projects.net/ https://gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/

  9. U+0007 represents the character for ‘make the bell on the teletypewriter ring.’ This isn’t practically used by hardly anyone today, but it remains a part of the Unicode standard and probably will forever. I don’t want to disparage Unicode, because it does provide a good solution to the problem. But it has its own issues and its own degree of complexity. This issue is something I’ve been thinking about lately since s…

  11. I’ve been quite impressed by the Gemini browser LaGrange[1]. Does it’s own antialiased text rendering straight to SDL. Automatic site coloring as an option. Would be neat to see something like this with basic HTML 3-ish support (basic tables, lists etc) [1]: https://gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/

  14. As someone rooting for [NetSurf]( https://www.netsurf-browser.org/ ) (and any other remaining independent browser engines) to survive, I wonder if they'd be better off not supporting Javascript at all and simply focusing on good support for modern HTML and CSS, so it can at least be used to read documents. If Javascript is what finished TenFourFox, maybe attempting to support the full weight of modern Javascript and…

For anyone who may not be familiar with it, SDF is actually pretty amazing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SDF_Public_Access_Unix_System Among many, many other services, you can get your own Gopher or Gemini site there. 18. > HTTP stands for Hypertext transfer protocol. The whole thing was predicated on sending HTML documents and couldn't originally send anything else. OK, HTTP/0.9 was apparently like that. By HTTP/1.0 (1996) they'd learned better, and that was the growth phase: https://www.w3.org/Protocols/HTTP/1.0/spec.html > MIME is a hack to add attachments to email that was later also hacked into HTTP so you could send add "attach…

  19. While it's focus is Gemini, the LaGrange Browser [1] supports Gopher too (as well as Finger and possibility FTP in the future) on almost all modern platforms. Bombadillo [2] is a great TUI gopher client as well. Setting up a Gopherhole is relatively easy, as most pubnix/tilderverse communities offer Gopher hosting for free [3]. 1. https://gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/ 2. https://bombadillo.colorfield.space/ 3. https://ti…

  20. Gemini ecosystem is quite active. There other smaller protocols as well, all part of the "small web" or "small internet" movement. I wrote a bit about Gemini recently[2]. If you're curious about it, you might want to give it a read. I've implemented some of them in my little toy browser Fafi[1]. If you want a browser with more features and more polish you can check Lagrange[3], it also supports Gopher and Finger bes…

  22. The problem I've noticed is you can't get enough people to respect the minimalism. Yes you could implement Gemini in HTTP by having everyone play by the rules, but how many of the links even on HN go to pages with ads, autoplay videos, and "sign up for updates" modal popups? When I browse Gemini with Lagrange ( https://gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/ ) if you avoid orange links, then you're guaranteed to have a quiet, text…

  23. what you cite as a bug feels like a refreshing feature to me. Looking at how the Lagrange [1] client interprets Gemini shows how rich and enjoyable Gemini can be, and it leaves me optimistic that we could browse it in the future on something like an ereader. The constraints that it imposes makes it so the author is encouraged to write text, not a website. This doesn't have to reproduce the entire suite of features t…

  24. Oh wow, I hadn't heard of Spartan, but it looks like what I'm after. Gemini is interesting, but I didn't like how TLS and Unicode rules out a lot of old retro machines from being able to access it. Looks like Spartan is already supported by the excellent Lagrange [1] Gopher/Gemini browser from v1.13 onwards, so I'm happy to discover this! Thanks for sharing! That's not an advantage that is exclusive to TUIs; after all, you're running your TUI inside a graphical application that emulates a terminal. (Unless you're rocking an actual VT102, in which case I bow down to you.) In fact there's an entire class of applications that are extremely snappy and keyboard driven, by their very nature: games. 29. There is an easy way to write GUI apps that both look good and do not boil down to the lowest common denominator of 80s state-of-the-art: use something like SDL/GLFW, with an immediate mode UI toolkit on top. Lagrange ( https://gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/ ) is a beautiful app that (despite my ideological purism in favoring more "native" solutions) I find perfectly usable and pleasant to use.

  30. Not just the web. Gemini and Gopher did an astounding reduction on proxied sites. Such as gemini://gemi.dev/cg-bin/waffle.cgi Open any linked site, or enter your own. Just try with Ars Technica. Head to the bottom, and compare the size of the converted Gemini page vs the original HTML one. As for the client, you can try Lagrange. https://gmi.skyjake.fi/lagrange/ For news over Gopher (they will work on Lagrange too)…
