What Hacker News says?

  1. Also, don't eat boxed foods or foods that went through multiple stages of processing. In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan spells it out very well, but I'll just give you my simple definition: Eating healthy is as close to eating dirt without actually eating dirt. Produce, grain, cheese, 1/2 pound to a pound of meat a week[1], and whatever else Marion Nestle recommends[1.5]. Just imagine what primitive man would eat…

I like the variation that includes apples: http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-the-apple-pancake-13112 Also, my favorite biscotti recipe (a proper Italian biscotti without butter): https://smittenkitchen.com/2008/07/chocolate-hazelnut-biscot... (Skip the hazelnuts -- you will go crazy trying to peel them, blanched or not -- buy hazelnut meal/flour instead and use 8 oz of it in place of the hazelnuts.)

Look at any old Italian kitchen and you'll be amazed how much can be accomplished with next to no space. One of my favourite food bloggers has a fairly small kitchen. Not tiny by any standards, but smaller than typical suburban Instagram food blogger types. She seems to do a lot of her cooking and prep on a hot place and ikea cart. Fairly impressive and what I strive for in my own kitchen https://smittenkitchen.com/…

  8. I like it, although I think there are other organizing principles to explore. Seconded on all the 'fork' comments its not at all intuitive to a chef what you mean here. At present the top level abstraction is the recipe which you've sort of equated to 'source code' but when you look at something like Github or Sourceforge the high level abstraction is the 'project' and in the food world the closest I could come up w…

  10. https://smittenkitchen.com/2007/09/bronx-worthy-bagels/ This bagel recipe is the best I've tried. Not that hard to do, but it will overheat your mixer so you have to knead by hand.

As many others have said, iPhone app definitely. This will make the site more casual. For the "pivot" i'd perhaps suggest trying to get people to document recipes with multiple pictures, this lets you target the more hard core user. Theres an excellent blog that i love reading that gives a good example of what im describing: http://smittenkitchen.com/

  15. Neat. Now do it for gluten free flour[1] :) this is the go-to recipe in my home. You can sub in GF flour (Bob's 1:1) and they're consistently excellent. https://smittenkitchen.com/2011/06/blueberry-yogurt-multigra... [1] so I can enjoy it!
