What Hacker News says?
God, I've been complaining about this for so many years now. The hardest part about duplicating the Web 1.0 aesthetic (well) has been finding the primary locations where the tile/image/iconsets originated and mirroring them for modern consumption — I'm still working on that. http://dataswamp.org/~john/

HN discussionSo many people make websites that basically look like they are from the 90's (though without all the animated GIFs haha), and use basic features without any strictly-modern stuff. HN discussionI really enjoyed participating in Solene%'s Old Computer Challenge 2022: < https://dataswamp.org/~solene/2022-07-01-oldcomputerchalleng... > I adjusted my rules a bit to make them fit into my setup (WFH, Homekit lights, etc), the main challenge being that rather than accounting for time spent online and trying to limit it to 1h, I just wouldn't go online at all (unless for work). It was a wonderful week, and even on…

HN discussionHow come every ssh connection goes via a proxy user? Isn't that masking the accounting? Or am I misreading it? https://dataswamp.org/~solene/2023-12-31-hardened-openbsd-wo... edit: oh, it's for outbound ssh, but I'm still none the wiser in terms of auditing (or what that would do to git clones without some modification)

HN discussionI am not sure what is meant by this. It certainly seems to have QoS in the form of the queue directive. It works for me for limiting buffer bloat on my VDSL model upstream. The defaults work well for my VOIP stuff so that all I have is this in my pf.conf: queue outq on re1 flows 1024 bandwidth 3000K max 3000K qlimit 1024 default I think the magic is in the "flows" part. HN discussionGood article. I did not see this mentioned: Doesn't one of nix or guix have a mode to operate as a guest or overlay on an existing OS? I find this[1] in the area of Nix as and OpenBSD guest, but I've barely glanced at it for applicability. [1] https://dataswamp.org/~solene/2021-05-08-openbsd-vmm-nixos.h... I see some reference to Ubuntu with a nix package manager installed on it.

HN discussionSome of the bloat is institutional, or maybe we should say, "civilisational"? Supporting TLS, modern hardware, media codecs, and so on - this puts a lower bound on the size of a "full" desktop OS, before you even consider a web browser. The next question is what kind of software do you need to get useful work done - not everyone writes code; if you want to edit audio, video, photos, do CAD, etc sometimes you simply…

HN discussionAnsible makes mutable changes to the OS, task by task. Nix is immutable . A new change is made entirely new, and only after the build is successful, all packages are "symlinked" to the current system. Fedora Silverblue is based on ostree [1]. It works similarly like git, but on your root tree. But it requires you to reboot the whole system for the changes to take effect. Since Nix is just symlinked packages, you don…
