Why HN links it

HN readers link this blog for technical posts, including a PHP vs C# performance comparison and a sign-up form post that uses proof-of-work as a spam precaution, with the implementation code linked from the blog.

What Hacker News says?

  1. I maintain a thingy written in C# that does cool things with keyboard backlights on System76 machines in Linux. Like make the left-third respond to CPU usage, right third blink when you have unread notifications, etc. The biggest one was turning off the keyboard when the screen blanked[1]. Almost all of the fun stuff requires native interop. 1: https://withinboredom.info/blog/2019/11/26/detecting-if-a-sc...

  5. I don't think fibers are that great. There's no indication that a function call will create a fiber and do things[1] that might screw with your current state. When you know fibers are around, you need to code more defensively. [1]: https://withinboredom.info/blog/2022/01/04/thoughts-on-php-f...

  7. I rebuilt durable-functions in php. Durable Functions is a C# actor model runtime. My PHP implementation meets or exceeds the same benchmarks as the C# version. > It could be easily proven by doing a bunch of work but obviously there is no point in me proving it. Because you cannot prove it... :) I wrote this post a few years ago, that actually spurned some improvements in C# ... so here you go: https://withinboredo…

  9. Yes. Go doesn't even offer the ability to use Nagle's algorithm: https://withinboredom.info/2022/12/29/golang-is-evil-on-shit... Nagle's algorithm is dealing with connections. These are FIN_ACK. Meaning the connection was told to close and we need to ack the closed connection.

  13. The previous post on this blog makes another worthless comparison, this time based on lines of code: https://withinboredom.info/blog/2022/03/16/my-favorite-langu... > Like, look at this Merge Sort in C# [1] (130 lines) and then look at it in PHP (31 lines) [2]. You can’t beat that kind of productivity, not to mention in PHP, you can even mix data types (like ints and floats) where in the C# version, it’d be much mor…

  15. I did Ctrl-F on "proof-of-work" in this thread to see if anyone had tried this, you seem to be the only one. Seems like a good precaution before sending even a verification email. Did you have to roll your own or was there some proof of work library you were able to use? Update: Ah, found the code - https://withinboredom.info/posts/how-this-blog-actually-work...
