What Hacker News says?
Using only files for logging is the last thing I would do in 2018. I use Serilog for structured logging. Depending on the log destination, your logs are either stored in an RDMS (I wouldn’t recommend it) or created as JSON with name value pairs that can be sent directly to a JSON data store like ElasticSearch or Mongo where you can do adhoc queries. https://stackify.com/what-is-structured-logging-and-why-deve...

HN discussionFound it here: https://stackify.com/whats-new-in-java-10/ ——— start quote ——— This feature has been a long time coming. It was suggested as far back as 2001, and was closed at that time with the following comment by Gilad Bracha: Humans benefit from the redundancy of the type declaration in two ways. First, the redundant type serves as valuable documentation – readers do not have to search for the declaration of get…

HN discussionI always have to Google it. http://stackify.com/errors-log-management/ Dunno why it's not more discoverable. Maybe they're doing tests, because it's underpriced IMO. I've not found any service like them - maybe New Relic but that's 10x the price, last I checked. Azure has something they're pushing in their UI, too, but a brief look made it seem nontrivial to implement. Apart from that, Stackify is $15/server/mo for…

HN discussionUgh, I started reading this before I realized it's the same person who thinks C#'s under the hood improvements in the last decade can be handwaved away. Yeah, 10% of Java's market share is not larger than C# https://stackify.com/popular-programming-languages-2018/ If it was, those languages would be showing up on Github's survey above C# as well, they all consider Java independently not as a combination of all JVM l…

HN discussionThere are nuances with multi-threading in C#. I don't agree with OP about I/O-bound ops, I think if you're looking to green threading, you've taken a wrong approach. > [0] the Task.Runmethod offloads the provided action to the thread pool, and the await keyword yields control back to the caller until the task completes. All async code must be in an async call stack, virtual threads are 100% transparent because its t…

HN discussion3 years ago I started a company (Stackify) with the hopes of building a better nagios. But it doesn't seem like developers really wanted it. They wanted and needed a lot more as basic server metrics didn't really tell much of a story about application health. The shift to cloud based services also makes a lot of basic monitoring tools unnecessary. Cloud based apps don't really need to monitor servers or infrastructu…

HN discussionI would suggest looking at Stackify. We track exceptions similar to all the other mentioned tools in this thread, but we also provide log management. Having exceptions & logs together is a lot more powerful. For example, we can show you all of your logging statements that happened before and after the error on the same web request. http://stackify.com/errors-log-management/ -Founder of Stackify

HN discussionMy startup is in Bizspark and uses Azure. ( http://stackify.com ) We looked at AWS vs Azure and decided on Azure due to its PaaS capabilities. It has its quirks like anything done. Their support is fantastic. We have two local evangelist type reps, a local sales rep, and have talked to many people through their tech support. Even exchanged emails with their developers and management. I really like their SQL federati…

HN discussionAs someone who has written an APM profiler for multi-threaded, async .NET web applications I can attest to how hard it is. There are actually a few ways to do async type methods in .NET and supporting all of them was even more fun. Begin/End older style method delegates async/await with normal tasks async/await with TaskCompletionSource (aka fake tasks) and of course completely custom ways in 3rd party libraries Cra…

HN discussionI agree, New Relic's pricing model is almost too "enterprise". Per host pricing seems high, and difficult to scale. It's too bad, because I love everything else they offer. I'm even considering the new Insights service. I think they need to introduce a mid-tier pricing level between Free and Pro. They've got a good foothold in the market as a all-in-one solution. I've attempted to find a drop-in replacement, without…
