Why HN links it

HN readers link it as a source for population-by-latitude data, used in energy and climate discussions. It is also cited for map analysis such as the longest straight line in Great Britain.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 7 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

Amusing southern California is getting more watts per m2 then A lot of North Africa. This is a good source, population by latitude. http://www.statsmapsnpix.com/2021/11/world-population-by-lat...

  5. I look at California ISO's site https://www.caiso.com/todays-outlook/supply The difference between summer and winter for renewables is 20%. In California the difference is driven mostly by solar. This is an interesting page. http://www.statsmapsnpix.com/2021/11/world-population-by-lat... Majority of the worlds population lives between 40 north and 10 degrees south. And also some places like Scotland had lots of wind…

  7. Very nice result. You can also do the same in QGIS, this blog post shows off using orthographic projection for other goals: https://www.statsmapsnpix.com/2019/09/globe-projections-and-...

  9. True, but the world population isn't distributed symmetrically: there aren't many living at high latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere. See graph "population by latitude" here: https://www.statsmapsnpix.com/2021/11/world-population-by-la... There are quite a few people living North of 45°N, but hardly any South of 45°S.
