Stefan Johansson's personal blog at kstefanj.github.io covers programming and systems. Since 2020, 7 different Hacker News readers have linked it 9 times, most often “GC progress from JDK 8 to JDK 17”. The last post was in 2023, but the archive is still widely read.
Too few sampled comments (7) to say how often HN recommends it.?
Why HN links it
HN commenters cite this author's benchmark post on Java garbage collector pause times and performance from JDK 8 to 17, usually as data to support their points about Java GC. None of the comments judge the writing itself.
Summarised by Claude from a sample of 7 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?
You mention GCd languages being a bad choice for games in your README. But these days Java has GCs that have < 1ms pauses. I wonder if it is still true? https://kstefanj.github.io/2021/11/24/gc-progress-8-17.html

HN discussionJava's ZGC as of jdk 17 has very low pause times (e.g. a p99 of roughly 0.1 ms in this benchmark[0]). Their stated goal is to remain sub 1 ms, but in practice it stays well below that. The JVM isn't the most common game dev platform, but I have been enjoying using LibGDX with Scala on jdk 17 with ZGC. [0] https://kstefanj.github.io/2021/11/24/gc-progress-8-17.html

HN discussionThis is a modern GC: https://kstefanj.github.io/2021/11/24/gc-progress-8-17.html Way better than RC.

on “Reference count, don't garbage collect”jfyi: here is the latency GC numbers (JDK17) - https://kstefanj.github.io/2021/11/24/gc-progress-8-17.html . The experience is vastly different compared to an 8 year old jdk version (jdk 8)

on “Go does not need a Java-style GC”It's definitely the slowest, and by pretty significant margins. Those tests did, however, uncover bad default settings in JDK 14 on some machine sizes, which happened to be those Phoronix ran their benchmarks on: https://kstefanj.github.io/2020/04/16/g1-ootb-performance.ht... Those bad defaults are fixed in 15. Moving away from 8 results in a significant saving in hardware/hosting costs for the vast majority of larg…

on “Talking to Postgres Through Java 16 Unix-Domain Socket Channels”Seriously? Since 2011, so since Java 7, stagnation in performance? That's a startling claim. I'd like to see some numbers as well. I'll start the first round with this article: https://kstefanj.github.io/2021/11/24/gc-progress-8-17.html Note: this is comparing to Java 17 to Java 8 (released in 2014), and we are now at Java 24!

on “Constrained languages are easier to optimize”> G1 has seen the greatest improvement from 8 to 17 Yep. G1 in newer JDKs is very different from G1 in JDK 8, but Parallel GC has also seen very significant improvements: https://kstefanj.github.io/2021/11/24/gc-progress-8-17.html
