Why HN links it

HN readers link this blog as examples of a parent teaching young children STEM and programming, including math problems for a 3rd grader, a Python-in-Minecraft lesson for an 8-year-old, and posts about Beast Academy.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

This site is a combination of some of the fun math and science stuff that I do with my son. Here's my personal web site. (This is my second blog. I kept my first one, the Diary of an Insane Cell Mechanic, before "blogging" was even a word!)

What Hacker News says?

  1. There are many many wonderful math books, and many many wonderful math resources on youtube. (As well as, of course, many many terrible ones!) I second AOPS! They have a fantastic series for younger kids called "Beast Academy" ( https://beastacademy.com ), and their challenge problem sets are fantastic! The same blog has a couple of other posts about them: https://leosstemhacks.wordpress.com/2019/11/06/the-three-bes…

  3. > Somehow I doubt "Leo" actually understands anything about NP-completeness The parent is a Stanford professor that studies scientific reasoning. I would assume he is a good judge of what his kid understands. This article was 4 years into a series about teaching his child STEM concepts. https://leosstemhacks.wordpress.com/about/

  5. This isn't a lispy syntax, but it is teaching a young kid ... if young = 8y.o.: https://leosstemhacks.wordpress.com/2016/12/20/pythoncraft-c... (lots of other examples in this blog) I agree that a lisp would be way better than either the internal command block language, or the ugly python hack.
