I'm not talking about China. I was just making an observation that "low quality food" is ultra-processed food. So if the Chinese are now eating ultra-processed food, like many of us in the US or Europe, then it's no wonder that obesity and diabetes is on the rise. > " as opposed to unconstrained individual choice " There's no such thing, you're not aware of many of the recent findings. I recommend you go read: https…

HN discussionI know and it would be pretty hard for Keto meals to not become palatable due to all the fat. Long term all weight loss diets are equally disappointing, because appetite does come back and compliance becomes an issue. At maintenance we can actually tolerate a lot, esp if we are lightly active, but if you want to lose weight, striving for better tasting food is a poor strategy. An excelent book on this subject is "Th…

HN discussionI would agree with banning any ads for children under 18 years old, b/c they get bombarded with ads for junk food on all media channels. Plus I would agree with media campaigns teaching people that sugary drinks are a leading cause of obesity. But I disagree with banning ads on sugary drinks specifically because I am increasingly concerned about recommending, taxing or banning foods based on weak scientific evidence…

HN discussionI’m talking about irreversible physiological changes caused by getting fat that don’t reverse after you lose weight. This is what makes keeping weight off after losing a bunch harder than maintaining the same weight if you’ve never been fat to start with. Things like damage in the hippocampus preventing normal leptin signaling. Once you’ve gotten fat, you’re pretty much fucked for life, even if you reverse the behav…

HN discussionThere is a lot of work done right now on formulation of defined faeces microbe sets, partly because most people expect that ultimately these treatments will have to be approved by the authorities. This is probably a good idea, as the microbiome consists of both bacteria, virus and eukaryote organisms, and the survey people use for 95% of all microbiome work can only capture the bacterial fraction, so a faeces transp…

HN discussion> fasting, intermittent fasting, keto, carnivore etc diets. To preface, I'm a long-time intermittent fasting, and tend to eat fairly carnivorous (though supplement with a lot of vegetables and legumes). But none of what you've listed is a silver bullet. The research is pretty conclusive that the proximate cause of all metabolic disease is caloric intoxication.[1] Regardless of the timing and consumption of calories,…

HN discussionYes, probably a feedback loop. There is lots of research showing modern food is engineered for high "food reward value" which overcomes our satiety mechanisms, and is essentially addictive (e.g. https://www.stephanguyenet.com/thehungrybrain/ ). Not to say that modern processed food isn't also quite unhealthy - with mental health implications, I suspect it is the food reward aspect itself that is mostly responsible f…
