What Hacker News says?

  1. I don't know what I find more annoying; the ridiculous US copyright system that allows people to copyright almost 'anything'... or the unfathomably stupid people employed by the likes of Amazon, YouTube et al whose policies seem to be "Ban first. Ask questions later... Bu let's not bother with the questions" It doesn't surprise me that a 200 years dead composer's works are considered subject to copyright when, appar…

Other nitter instances can be seen here: [2] The twitter thread also contained a reference to this interesting article on "Why bother with What Three Words?"[3], which itself links to other interesting articles: [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] W3W is a neat core idea poorly thought through. I've been doing that for years [well, not the shopping trolley bit] on websites which throw fullscreen modal announcements in my face. The second it happens, I click off that website. 10. I've had it happen to me with four Twitter accounts at once. All locked overnight in January with no explanation or response to emails from their support dept[0]. It took 6 months and a formal GDPR complaint to the Irish Data Protection Commissioner before Twitter finally unlocked the accounts and admitted they'd made a mistake[1]: >Hello, >We’re writing to let you know that we’ve unsuspended your >accounts. We’re s…

  11. Oh dear. Not this drivel again! When will it die? I would have expected the HN crew to be able to spot the obvious shortcomings of W3W a mile off. Even if much of the supposedly tech savvy media seems to think this idiocy is genius and continues to blow smoke up their arse. The only impressive thing about W3W is the indefatigability of their relentless PR department. https://stiobhart.net/2016-01-15-stupidest-idea-e…

If using LESS is hampering your work-flow, you're "holding it wrong". Have a look at this article, especially the bit where he mentions " less-autocompile": http://stiobhart.net/2015-10-03-my-atom-setup/

  13. This new-fangled Google feature and the resulting Plus Codes actually reminds me quite a bit of Open Postcode [1] system which I read about many years ago but which, unfortunately, never seems to have progressed beyond a proof-of-concept, covering only Ireland. I actually think the Open Postcode system is a bit more flexible as you can increase/decrease the accuracy by varying the number of characters: >For geolocat…

Maybe, if we all did that, the site owners would stop this unbelievably annoying practice. https://stiobhart.net/2015-05-04-overlays-new-popups/
