Why HN links it

A polling site where visitors vote on whether Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met, with each challenge linked to the HN comment that posed it. Commenters discuss the voting and the site's lack of discussion features.

Summarised by Claude from a sample of 3 HN comments that link here. Each comment is marked recommending, critical or neutral (citing without judging); how this works.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Instead of doing 4 comparisons against each character `\n`, `\r`, `;` and `"` followed by 3 or operations, a common trick is to do 1 shuffle, 1 comparison and 0 or operations. I blogged about this trick: https://stoppels.ch/2022/11/30/io-is-no-longer-the-bottlenec... (Trick 2) Edit: they do make use of ternary logic to avoid one or operation, which is nice. Basically (a | b | c) | d is computed using `vpternlogd` an…

  3. AVX2 is pretty much ubiquitous, the implementation above is only SSE2. I wrote a blog post with the main AVX2 tricks [1] which includes how to deal with repeated white space when counting words [1] https://stoppels.ch/2022/11/30/io-is-no-longer-the-bottlenec...

  5. I blogged about this when I stumbled up on it the first time: https://stoppels.ch/2022/11/30/io-is-no-longer-the-bottlenec... "Trick 2: Creating masks efficiently". It's pretty neat.

  7. This site has a real lost opportunity. One of the challenges it issues is for a computer-generated painting to be difficult to tell apart from human artists' work: https://stoppels.ch/goalposts/c/11050960.html Visiting that page ought to show me an example artwork or two so I can make up my own mind. The website is merely a polling ststion (a sort of popularity contest) and unfortunately lacks any discussion capabil…

  11. So I take it that some people are voting "No" on things just to troll / ostrich out of reality? Like, who's still denying that AI can "write software" ( https://stoppels.ch/goalposts/?c=13650937 ) or pass the turing test ( https://stoppels.ch/goalposts/?c=11255120 )?

  13. Yes. One of my comments is in there [0] and is basically: "AI still hasn't passed a proper Turing test. A proper Turing test is 1 hour or more. Has any AI passed it?" How do you answer that? "'Yes', AI has NOT passed a proper Turing test", or "'Yes', AI has passed a proper Turing test". My comment doesn't actually make any prediction to judge, it's just an observation and an argument. 15. Heh, there's one of mine: https://stoppels.ch/goalposts/?c=39727943 "GPT-4 looks at original ASCII art of a foot, not copied from the web, and says it is a foot." The vote is currently 64% yes, 18% no. Just now I asked Opus 5.5 to generate an ASCII art foot, and it did a passable job. It's not great, but it's a foot. Then I pasted it into ChatGPT (whatever they're serving to the free tier by default, which seems to…

  17. Well, I can answer this one: https://stoppels.ch/goalposts/?c=40662140 jerf, 2024: "If it could be solved with a Math Overflow-post level of effort, even from Terence Tao, it isn't what I was talking about as "high level math". "I also am not surprised by "Consider a generation function" coming out of an LLM. I am talking about a system that could solve that problem, entirely, as doing high level math. A system that…

  21. For the particular case of the 5 delimiters '\n', '.', '?', '!', and ';', it just happens to be so that you can do this as a single shuffle instruction, replacing the explicit lookup table. You can do this whenever `c & 0x0F` is unique for the set of characters you're looking for. See https://stoppels.ch/2022/11/30/io-is-no-longer-the-bottlenec... for details.
