Why HN links it

HN commenters link superkuh.com for a page on modifying RTL-SDR software, a personal blog post, a note about Blogger account deletion, and a downloadable Perl script. None of the comments judge the writing.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Trading feed lists is handy. I'm in. Mine covers all the sciences/tech/etc plus a little politics/entertainment. Everything is sorted into categories. http://superkuh.com/feedlist.opml (93KB) As long as Firefox can still render feeds I don't care if they take out the bits to manage subscriptions to third party services. That seems like fluff to me. I think most people who use RSS use native readers or, at the least,…

  3. There's a software modification here which is also interesting: http://superkuh.com/rtlsdr.html#directsample The whole idea of the community figuring out hacks to use this hardware in ways that were never intended by its original designers, including exploiting bugs/artifacts, reminds me of the demoscene.

  4. Wow. I'm you in both respects. I just had the same problem with my dad and even though he can send and receive email from his gmail account they still won't tell him the password. All he has is the fragile oauth token on mail.app on his apple smart phone that can only connect via wifi due to the loss of the old phone number. Additionally, my mail from my independent mailserver just started being marked as spam by go…

On this subject, I'm still seeding the leaked Opera 12 source w/presto. http://superkuh.com/opera12v15presto-source.torrent (full torrent dl'd is 222.6 MB) But... browser engines are no longer browsers like they were in Opera's prime. They are operating systems with all the complexity that brings. I don't think presto could fill that role. That said, it'd make a great actual browser.

  8. I've been doing large sessions ever since Opera introduced tabs in my teen years (2000). It's how I grew up and second nature now. Tabs are great because they provide context both as a span of tabs showing how I got from point A to point B and as individual tab due to tab history backwards. I've been regularly saving my session files since ~2001 although I only have data from 2003 onward. It's great to load up an ol…

I've kept a copy of the original "The Guy I Almost Was" (slightly different images in the ending, and no javascript) on my local mirror ( http://superkuh.com/almostguy/ ) for decades. Almost Guy is still my favorite but "Night at the rave" is just so wholesome I love it too. "A Suitable Seed"s mess…

The rep I talked to and the price I gave $156/mo does not include a static IP. That was something like $10/mo more. Sure, the firmware they tftp to my modem will be different but it's not giving me dedicated RF bandwidth on the exact same RF hardware pat…

  12. Webmentions are pretty cool as is covered in the article under discussion. I recently implemented a static webmentions receiver for my static site and got a pingback implementation as a side effect ( http://superkuh.com/blog/2020-01-10-1.html ). Pingback is old and well known so it gets a lot of spam. But webmention is still new enough it's still useful. Sure, it'll eventually get spammed out to but this is the life…

The top of the bash script has a readme in the comments. For 70-1000 MHz it's just a homemade discone antenna hooked to an rtlsdr dongle running rtl_power. I've been exploring the world of radio emissions with rtlsdr since 2013 ( http://superkuh.com/rtlsdr.html ) and I'm still finding plenty of new things to do. IMO, the newest cool stuff with rtlsdr are computational hacks to align multiple non-coherent receivers in time to do distributed direction finding and the like.

  18. Daemon and Freedom are top class hard scifi. The plot hinges on technical detail that is both completely plausible and a natural extension of existing information technology. It's obvious that Suarez really understands what he's talking about in a deep way. I'd say "Daemon" is top twenty for best hard scifi books. http://superkuh.com/hardscifi.txt Delta-v is good scifi and I love this kind of background detail.

Without those thing websites are just too fragile for humans to keep going more than a few years. Whereas with those things websites have indefinite lifespans even unmantained. 20. I'm there with you (1500+ in one browser instance). But I don't consider it a problem. I have tab suspend and full text tab search via add-ons, I group my tabs linearly by topic and date, and the older 1/3 of tabs I know position by heart. It was amazing then back when I could do 50 tabs, and it's amazing now with firefox forks when I can do 500 tabs with less than 3GB of ram used (with Noscript on for most websites not whitelisted). But don't try this in a multi-process browser, not even modern Firefox can handle truly large session files like Palemoon or Seamonkey classic can. I have saved my Opera->Firefox->P…

Then if someone has actually sent a webmention (as opposed to pingback spam) I just use curl to respond.
